Another digital disaster has rocked the cryptocurrency world—this time targeting the growing, yet controversial, industry of Bitcoin ATMs. Bitcoin Depot, the largest crypto ATM operator in North America, has confirmed a serious data breach affecting more than 26,000 customers, leaking sensitive personal information—including driver’s license numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, and emails.
The breach occurred over a year ago, yet customers were only notified recently after federal law enforcement finished its own secretive probe into the incident. According to regulatory disclosures filed in Maine and Massachusetts, exactly 26,732 people were impacted.
Bitcoin Depot, headquartered in Atlanta, operates more than 8,000 crypto ATMs across the U.S. and Canada, claiming to have processed millions of cash-based transactions since its founding in 2016. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the company posted $164.2 million in revenue.
Delayed Disclosure — By Design or Negligence?
The delayed public notice has sparked concern among privacy advocates and customers alike. Bitcoin Depot claimed it had completed its own investigation back on July 18, 2024, but withheld notifying victims until federal investigators wrapped up their inquiry last month.
This raises questions about whether customers’ right to timely disclosure was sacrificed in favor of law enforcement operational secrecy—an increasingly common, yet troubling, trend in cybercrime cases.
“These kinds of delays leave victims exposed for months, often without any knowledge their identities are already being exploited,” warned one privacy attorney specializing in fintech security breaches.
What Was Stolen?
According to official filings, the stolen data included:
- Full names
- Phone numbers
- Residential addresses
- Email addresses
- Driver’s license numbers
Bitcoin Depot did not offer identity protection services to victims, likely because Social Security numbers were not part of the breach. However, experts argue that leaking driver’s license data and home addresses still leaves individuals vulnerable to:
- Identity theft
- SIM-swapping attacks
- Phishing campaigns
- Physical targeting or home invasions
“Driver’s license numbers are often used to reset accounts and confirm identities,” warned a cyber-risk analyst. “This information in the wrong hands is a loaded weapon.”
Bitcoin ATMs: A Crime Magnet?
The breach has reignited long-standing criticism of Bitcoin ATMs, which have been routinely flagged by law enforcement for enabling:
- Money laundering
- Tax evasion
- Fraudulent schemes
- Drug and human trafficking
Just this week, New Zealand took the bold step of banning crypto ATMs entirely, citing unmanageable risks of illicit financial activity.
This Wasn’t an Isolated Case
The Bitcoin Depot breach is part of a rapidly escalating series of attacks targeting crypto ATM providers and crypto exchanges alike:
- In December 2024, rival crypto ATM operator Byte Federal suffered a similar data breach, compromising nearly 60,000 customers.
- In May 2025, cryptocurrency trading giant Coinbase was hacked, leaking the personal data of nearly 70,000 users—including names, emails, and in some cases, physical addresses.
The Coinbase hack triggered particular outrage amid a surge in physical attacks on crypto holders:
- In Paris, masked kidnappers abducted the daughter of a crypto executive, demanding ransom.
- Other high-profile incidents have surfaced globally, with criminals targeting crypto investors using leaked personal data from past breaches.
Michael Arrington, founder of TechCrunch and prominent crypto investor, warned that the Coinbase breach alone could lead to lethal consequences:
“This will lead to people dying. It probably already has,” he stated grimly.
