“The Hill, The Storm, and the Grace That Carries Us All”
This past week has reminded us just how fragile life can be — and how sacred every breath truly is.
As floods swept through Texas, entire neighborhoods vanished under the weight of rising waters. Families clung to rooftops, first responders worked without rest, and far too many lives were lost in silence — gone in the darkness, never to see another sunrise. We lift up every soul affected by the floodwaters, and every family left behind, into the arms of our Heavenly Father.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18
Let us not rush past this pain. Let us sit in it a moment. Let it remind us how important it is to hold those we love close, to never let words of kindness go unsaid, and to always remember: tomorrow is never promised — but eternity is.
And yet, in the same breath, we recognize that life is filled with both valleys and hills — and this week held both.
For me personally, it was a week of quiet progress. The systems ran slower than usual, the days felt long, and updates dragged — but maybe that’s what I needed. A bit of stillness. A moment to breathe. To take inventory of where things are, and where God is leading.
Amid the quiet, my wife and I celebrated seven years of marriage — a bond forged not merely in love, but in loyalty, in trials, and in unshakable faith. We’ve spent twelve years building — through storms and seasons, through laughter and lessons. Seven of those years married, all twelve under the eyes of God. And through it all… we never gave up.
“Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”
— Ecclesiastes 4:9–10
We didn’t just survive another year — we conquered it together. By God’s grace.
And just a few day later, I reached a milestone of my own: turning 50. Half a century. A number that comes with weight — and perspective. It’s funny how, when you finally reach “the top of the hill,” you realize it’s not about what’s behind or what’s ahead… it’s about who’s walking beside you, and who’s still holding you when the climb gets steep.
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you.”
— Isaiah 46:4
I’ve come to learn that time isn’t just something we count — it’s something we consecrate. Every year, every struggle, every blessing — it’s all part of the testimony. And while the world keeps spinning faster, we can slow down just long enough on a Sunday like this to thank the One who gave us breath in the first place.
So, if you’re reading this and you’re hurting — from the floods, from loss, from the weight of the world — you’re not alone.
If you’re celebrating like I did this week — remember who brought you this far.
And if you’re somewhere in between — just know you’re exactly where you need to be, in the hands of a Savior who’s never failed.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
— Hebrews 13:8
Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with both joy and sorrow in our hearts.
We pray for the people of Texas — for the grieving, the displaced, and those who have lost everything but their faith.
Wrap them in Your mercy. Give them strength.
Remind them they are not alone — not forgotten.
We thank You for the gift of family — for the bonds that last, and for the milestones that mark the journey.
Thank You for twelve years together and continuing more with my wife.
Thank You for the gift of fifty years on this Earth — and for every lesson along the way.
Guide us in the week ahead.
Help us to be patient in the slow seasons, and grateful in the fast ones.
Let us use our time wisely — to build, to speak truth, to love deeply, and to walk in Your light.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ,
Led by the power of the Holy Spirit,
We praise You, Our Father — now and always.
Amen.
Wishing peace, strength, and clarity to all who read this.
And to those still climbing the hill — you’re not alone.
You’re tethered to something greater.

Happy anniversary to you both, John! I agree, reading about the flooding in Texas, especially of the children lost at camp, was gut-wrenching.
And happy 50th! Wow! I really felt you were much younger for some reason, John. So take this as a compliment! Ha! I often feel I write like an old woman! 🫣🤣🥳
Haha, thank you so much, Sheila — I’ll definitely take that as a compliment! 😄 I always say it’s not the number, it’s the fuel still in the tank that counts. And for the record, your writing has soul — not age. Keep shining, Sheila! 😎
Aww, so nice to hear. Thanks so much, John!
You’re welcome, Sheila! 😎
