Afghanistan has been forced into silence. Authorities shut down internet and telecommunications services nationwide this week, cutting off millions from banking, communication, and even access to critical healthcare. The blackout is the most sweeping since the Taliban regained power, leaving a population already under severe pressure now facing a total digital freeze.
The shutdown, tracked and confirmed by multiple global monitoring groups including NetBlocks, Kentik, and Proton VPN, began late Monday and rolled into Tuesday. Both mobile data and fixed-line internet collapsed simultaneously, with telephone networks also brought down. What began earlier this month as a selective clampdown on fiber connections in several provinces has now escalated into a full nationwide blackout.
A Country Suddenly Disconnected
The consequences were immediate and severe. Kabul’s international airport was described as “nearly deserted,” with flights canceled or left untracked due to the loss of digital navigation systems. Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 marked many flights as “unknown,” while others simply vanished from schedules. The paralysis of aviation underscored just how much modern infrastructure relies on constant connectivity.
But the crisis didn’t stop at travel. Afghanistan’s fragile financial sector was also thrown into chaos, with banks, mobile money services, and international remittance systems disrupted. Food deliveries stalled, health clinics could not verify patient records or process supply orders, and online classrooms — a vital lifeline for Afghan girls barred from schools — went dark. Even television stations and government ministry websites were knocked offline, silencing already restricted communication channels.
International media outlets including AP and AFP reported that they could no longer reach their own bureaus in Kabul, making it nearly impossible to verify events on the ground in real time.
Silence From the Taliban
The Taliban, who rely heavily on messaging apps and social media for propaganda, internal communication, and foreign outreach, have issued no explanation for the blackout. Earlier partial shutdowns had been justified by officials as necessary to stop “immoral acts,” but the scale of this latest move suggests a deeper political calculation.
With earthquakes striking the east of the country and mass refugee returns placing enormous strain on resources, the blackout has left Afghanistan’s population vulnerable at the worst possible moment.
International Alarm
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the shutdown, warning that cutting communication at such a critical time “has far-reaching consequences.” UN officials highlighted risks to aviation safety, medical response, humanitarian coordination, and basic financial systems.
Indrika Ratwatte, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator, described the situation as “dire,” saying even landlines were failing. Agencies were forced to fall back on radios and satellite links — slower, more fragile methods — just to keep limited operations alive.
“We have been trying to reach the relevant authorities, and even they are struggling to communicate among themselves,” Ratwatte said. No formal explanation has been given to UN officials, though informal sources suggested the blackout might be temporary.
Human Toll
For ordinary Afghans, the blackout has been devastating. Women’s rights activist Sofia Ramyar said:
“We are unable to reach our colleagues or connect with our members in Afghanistan due to a complete shutdown of internet access across the country. This blackout has already isolated people, especially women, silenced voices, and turned an entire nation into a digital dark zone.”
Journalist and activist Nilofar Ayoubi added her own distress, saying she had been unable to contact her mother for more than nine hours:
“Afghanistan is back to the Stone Age.”
Global Trend of Digital Authoritarianism
The Afghan blackout is not an isolated case. Governments around the world have increasingly weaponized internet restrictions as tools of political control. Nepal recently restricted access to 26 platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Signal, YouTube, and X, sparking violent clashes between protesters and police. From Myanmar to Iran, mass blackouts have become a favored tactic for suppressing dissent and severing communication between citizens and the outside world.
What distinguishes Afghanistan’s shutdown is the scale of dependency: aviation grounded, medicine compromised, education severed, and even international aid hindered. It demonstrates not only the fragility of national infrastructure but also the geopolitical risks of allowing governments to control the “off switch” to an entire digital society.
