The Department of Justice has unsealed a sweeping indictment exposing one of the most elaborate sports-betting conspiracies in professional basketball history — involving current and former NBA players, coaches, and criminal intermediaries who allegedly used confidential injury and lineup information to place hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal wagers.
The case, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and the FBI’s New York Field Office, names six defendants: Eric Earnest (“Spook”), Marves Fairley (“Vez,” “Vezino Locks”), Shane Hennen (“Sugar”), Damon Jones (“D. Jones”), Deniro Laster (“Niro,” “Peso”), and Terry Rozier (“Scary Terry,” “Chum”) — all charged with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy for their roles in an insider-betting operation that spanned multiple seasons.
Federal investigators allege the group exploited non-public medical, injury, and player performance data — including information about planned early exits from games — to manipulate betting markets and generate illicit profit.
THE FBI OPERATION AND FEDERAL INDICTMENT
Between December 2022 and March 2024, defendants reportedly received insider information from NBA players and coaching staff, then funneled it through a network of bettors posing as legitimate gamblers. These “straw bettors” used regulated sportsbooks to place wagers under false pretenses, concealing the fact that the bets were based on confidential team data.
United States Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. described the scheme as “a sophisticated criminal enterprise that turned professional basketball into a profit engine for insider collusion,” emphasizing that “insider betting schemes erode the integrity of American sports.”
FBI Director Kash Patel said the operation demonstrates the Bureau’s continuing focus on corruption within professional athletics:
“Using private information and positions of power to rig gambling outcomes is not only illegal but destroys the integrity of the game. We will continue following the money and bringing those responsible to justice.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the case “an offense to every player and fan,” noting that the investigation uncovered instances where players “faked injuries and altered performance outcomes to guarantee specific bets would pay out.”
TIMELINE OF KEY INCIDENTS
- March 23, 2023 – Charlotte Hornets Game
Rozier allegedly informed co-conspirator Deniro Laster that he planned to leave the game early under the guise of injury. The group reportedly wagered over $200,000 on Rozier’s underperformance. He exited after nine minutes, and the bets paid off. - March 24, 2023 – Portland Trail Blazers Game
Earnest and Fairley allegedly acted on insider information that key Blazers players would sit out before that detail became public. Over $100,000 in bets were placed against Portland, generating substantial profit once the lineup was confirmed. - April 6, 2023 – Orlando Magic Game
Fairley placed an $11,000 wager based on a tip from an Orlando Magic insider that several top players would not compete. The Cavaliers beat the Magic by 24 points, yielding a significant payout. - February 9, 2023 & January 15, 2024 – Los Angeles Lakers Games
Former NBA player and coach Damon Jones allegedly sold medical and lineup data on key players to co-conspirators, allowing pre-release betting manipulation. - January 26 & March 20, 2024 – Toronto Raptors Games
Raptors player Jontay Porter reportedly agreed to exit both games early due to “injuries,” allowing conspirators to profit from under bets. Porter and intermediary Long Phi Pham have already pleaded guilty in connection with this part of the scheme.
LEGAL STAKES AND IMPACT
Each defendant faces up to 20 years in federal prison on both wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy counts. Prosecutors describe the case as a landmark example of how insider trading principles are evolving into the sports gambling arena — a space increasingly linked to financial crime and organized networks of digital betting manipulation.
The FBI’s joint investigation with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Field Office is ongoing, suggesting that further arrests or cooperating witnesses may emerge.
The defendants allegedly earned millions in cryptocurrency and cash through these wagers, laundering the proceeds through a mix of digital assets and shell accounts.
Federal officials say this indictment sends a message to professional sports leagues and betting institutions alike — the line between entertainment and corruption is not negotiable.
TRJ VERDICT
What began as fantasy entertainment has become a breeding ground for insider crime. The intersection of data analytics, gambling, and social access has created a new class of cyber-financial manipulation — one where the locker room and the betting terminal are only a text message apart.
For the FBI, this is more than a case about fraud; it’s about restoring public trust in competition itself. For professional sports, it’s a wake-up call that integrity cannot coexist with unchecked insider access.
This story underscores a growing truth: in the digital era, every bet is traceable — and so is every betrayal.

This is nothing but greed, pure and simple. NBA salaries are so high that I sometimes wonder how they all get paid. Most people will never make in a lifetime what some NBA players make in one year. How could someone not be content with that? This will make the entire league look bad when there are many players who are decent people. You’ve got guys like Mac McClung who has worked tirelessly to just get a shot at playing in a game. I’m sure he appreciated suiting up for the Indian Pacers last night. The only reason I saw him playing is that Cooper Flagg was on the opposing team and I was watching a replay to see how Cooper did. After working so hard to just get on the floor, I can’t see McClung wrecking it by doing something like this. Granted, I don’t know that much about McClung except that he has won 2 slam dunk contests at NBA All Star games but has found it hard to get a job at the highest level.
A message needs to be sent to those involved in this sort of thing. Besides losing their NBA paychecks, they should definitely spend time in prison.
You’re absolutely right, Chris — this one comes down to greed and arrogance. The salaries in professional sports today are astronomical, and yet for some, even that isn’t enough. What’s worse is how it taints the reputation of the league and every player who’s fought honestly to earn their spot.
You mentioned Mac McClung — and that’s a great example. He’s one of those players who’s worked his way up the hard way, grinding for every minute of court time, every contract, every opportunity. For guys like him, basketball is still about passion and perseverance — not payoffs and point spreads.
When players with influence decide to exploit their access and sabotage the integrity of the game, it isn’t just a crime against the system — it’s a betrayal of every fan, coach, and teammate who believes in the sport. You’re right: the message has to be unmistakable. This kind of corruption doesn’t just warrant fines or bans — it deserves prison time.
Thank you again, Chris. Your insight is always spot-on and greatly appreciated. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your excellent reply. Mac McClung has done just as you said. He played well in the little bit I saw of him. He did miss his first outside shot and I cringed a bit because I like to rout for guys like him.
Thank you for the interesting article!
