A 26-year-old individual identified as Brendan Munro Thompson, also known by the aliases Bella Thompson and Bella Castillo, has been charged with assaulting federal officers after allegedly accelerating a U-Haul truck toward United States Coast Guard personnel stationed on the bridge leading to Coast Guard Island in Oakland, California.
The incident occurred on the night of October 23, 2025, during an active demonstration near the eastern end of the bridge. Protesters had gathered in opposition to the rumored deployment of Department of Homeland Security units to assist in federal immigration enforcement operations across the Bay Area. The Coast Guard, positioned to secure access to the island and protect the Alameda base, found itself unexpectedly targeted by the vehicle.
According to the official complaint, Thompson drove a 10-foot U-Haul truck onto the approach leading to the bridge and began reversing toward a line of Coast Guard personnel standing near a law enforcement vehicle. The truck reportedly lurched forward and back several times before accelerating in reverse at high speed. Coast Guard officers issued repeated commands for the driver to stop. When the truck continued to gain speed and close distance — roughly fifteen to twenty feet from the line of officers — personnel feared that they were about to be struck or that the vehicle could contain explosives.
In response to the escalating threat, Coast Guard officers fired defensively toward the moving vehicle. The U-Haul then fled the area, and the driver was later located and treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot injury. The rapid escalation and close proximity of the vehicle placed all officers on the bridge in immediate jeopardy.
Federal prosecutors stated that the act constituted a deliberate assault on federal personnel performing official duties and emphasized that any attempt to use a vehicle as a weapon against law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The case underscores the growing danger faced by federal agents assigned to domestic security operations where civil demonstrations intersect with federal jurisdiction.
Thompson made an initial appearance before a federal magistrate in Oakland and remains in custody pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 10, 2025. The charge of assaulting a federal officer with a deadly or dangerous weapon carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine upon conviction.
The ongoing investigation remains under the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in coordination with Coast Guard law enforcement divisions.
