The intersection in Cartersville, Georgia, still carries the quiet echo of that night — the skid marks fading, but the story not forgotten. What began as a reckless crash turned into a shootout between a felon and law enforcement, ending with a federal sentence that sends a clear message: some lines can’t be crossed twice.
Shane Jacquces Barfield, thirty-nine, a multi-convicted felon and known domestic abuser, was sentenced to ten years in federal prison after firing a stolen pistol at responding police officers. Federal prosecutors said the confrontation was more than a moment of violence — it was the latest chapter in a pattern of defiance that finally met its end under federal law.
According to court records, the sequence began on the evening of September 17, 2023, when Barfield lost control of his vehicle in Cartersville. Witnesses told dispatchers that the car had spun through an intersection and slammed into the roadside. They also said the driver — carrying a gun — walked away from the wreck. What officers didn’t know yet was that Barfield wasn’t just fleeing an accident. He was already a wanted felon, in possession of methamphetamine, and holding a stolen firearm he had no legal right to touch.
When Barfield returned to his vehicle, Cartersville Police were already on scene. Officers ordered him repeatedly to drop the gun and step out. He refused. Then, as one officer crossed in front of the car, Barfield raised the weapon and fired.
Three officers returned fire, striking the vehicle and ending the standoff before it could spill into tragedy. Barfield survived and was taken into custody on the spot. Inside the car, investigators found a spent 9mm casing, the stolen pistol, and methamphetamine — confirmation that the casing matched the weapon Barfield had fired just moments earlier.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg called the case a reminder of why repeat offenders face stricter sentences under federal law. “Dangerous felons like Barfield forfeit the right to bear arms,” he said. “He broke the law when he possessed and discharged a stolen gun, endangering police and bystanders alike. Thanks to the decisive actions of the Cartersville Police Department and the FBI, he’ll serve a significant sentence — without the possibility of parole.”
The FBI’s Atlanta Division and the Cartersville Police Department led the investigation, reconstructing the ballistic trail, financial records, and chain of custody around the weapon. Their findings were simple but stark: the same man who once terrorized his home now fired on officers sworn to protect it. “His actions could have been deadly,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown, “but no one — officers or civilians — was hurt that night. That’s the only part of this story that didn’t end in loss.”
Cartersville Police Chief Frank McCann called Barfield a “continual threat to the community” — a violent felon whose possession of an illegal firearm wasn’t an accident but a calculated choice. “That’s a threat we don’t tolerate,” McCann said. “Our department, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office worked together to make sure this one didn’t slip through the cracks.”
On November 4, 2025, U.S. District Judge William M. Ray II sentenced Barfield to 10 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, charges he pleaded guilty to earlier this year. Under federal law, there is no parole — the decade will be served in full.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Terry prosecuted the case, describing Barfield’s behavior as part of a rising trend in repeat-offender firearm crimes where defiance turns into violence. Federal authorities say the sentence not only closes a dangerous chapter but also reaffirms that intent matters — especially when the weapon in question is pointed at law enforcement.
The case stands as another example of why the cooperation between local police and federal agencies has become essential in the fight against gun violence and illegal possession. Each conviction serves as a data point in a larger pattern — one where meth, stolen guns, and unresolved anger often intersect on the same street corner.
For Barfield, that intersection is no longer just a place in Bartow County. It’s the moment that marked the end of his freedom and the start of a federal sentence that leaves no room for negotiation.

I’m glad they caught this guy but if he’s out at the age of 49 I’m wondering if his sentence is long enough. With a record like that, and then this incident, I hope there isn’t some tragedy waiting to happen years down the road. I certainly hope not but 3 years of supervised release is not enough for this guys in my opinion.
Thanks for the news, John. I hope you are having a good evening!
You’re very welcome, Chris — that concern is completely valid. Too often, repeat offenders cycle back through the system with little real deterrence in place. When a person with that kind of record gets another chance, the hope is that it’s used for change — but history doesn’t always lean that way. You’re right — accountability has to last longer than the sentence. Thank you very much, Chris — I hope you’re having a great evening as well. God bless you and yours. 🙏😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your thoughtful reply. It would be great if people like this were rehabilitated. I hate to be a negative Nelly because anyone can change and I believe I know a Savior who can stand any person’s perception on its end. I’m thinking of what happened to Paul in the Bible and how his life was changed so much. I can only hope that this man finds the same faith that Paul had and that his outlook for the future becomes bright.
Thank you for your kind words, John. May God bless you and yours.
