The federal indictment unsealed in Washington reads like a collision of two separate lives: the disciplined world of Olympic sport and the ruthless hierarchy of transnational narco power. The defendant at the center of the case, Ryan James Wedding, once carved his legacy on snow-covered mountains as a professional athlete. Now he sits on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List, accused of overseeing a violent drug trafficking empire, laundering millions in cartel profits, and ordering the murder of a federal witness in Colombia.
What unfolded after his athletic career didn’t resemble a slow slide into crime. It was a vertical plunge. Witness intimidation evolved into targeted assassinations. Drug shipments multiplied into ton-scale pipeline routes. Associates shifted from trainers and sponsors to cartel operators, corrupt legal advisers, hired shooters, media manipulators, and a network of enablers stretching across North America and South America.
Federal agents have spent years dismantling that network piece by piece. This week, they hit a decisive phase.
Phase Two: Operation Giant Slalom
Ten defendants were arrested across the United States, Canada, and Colombia in the second stage of Operation Giant Slalom, a sweeping multinational investigation designed to isolate Wedding’s inner circle. With these arrests, authorities now have 11 defendants in custody, bringing the enterprise closer to collapse but leaving its lead architect still on the run in Mexico.
The individuals arrested are not low-level street traffickers. They include:
- a criminal barrister accused of providing privileged court documents
- a reggaeton musician who sourced sensitive contact information
- a digital operator who used a gangland-themed website for intelligence targeting
- logistics runners, fixers, Colombian intermediaries, Canadian associates, and cross-border enforcers
Every one of them is now tied to the January 31, 2025 execution of a federal witness — a man murdered in a Medellín restaurant after Wedding allegedly placed a bounty on his head.
The Murder That Triggered the Takedown
According to prosecutors, the victim was a cooperating witness in a 2024 narcotics case. Wedding allegedly ordered his killing to disrupt extradition threats and shield his criminal enterprise from further exposure. The bounty set the machine in motion. Associates tracked the man across borders. Intelligence was laundered through intermediaries. A photograph of the victim was allegedly posted online by a paid operator of a “gangland news” site specifically to help assassins locate him.
The victim was shot multiple times while seated in a public restaurant — a message written in bullets, ensuring the witness could never testify.
A Criminal Enterprise Hidden Behind the Mask of an Athlete
Wedding’s evolution from Olympic competitor to cartel-connected kingpin has stunned investigators. What emerged after his sporting career was a man aligned with some of the most dangerous actors in the Western Hemisphere. Federal officials confirmed that Wedding’s enterprise worked closely with the Sinaloa Cartel, leveraging its infrastructure to move tons of cocaine from Colombia, through Mexico, and into major American markets.
He operated from Mexico, shielded by cartel protectors, international borders, cash reserves, and enablers who treated him not as a fugitive, but as an asset.
His indictment includes:
- running a continuing criminal enterprise
- directing multiple murders
- trafficking staggering quantities of cocaine
- laundering drug proceeds through corrupt channels
- coordinating violent retaliation for stolen shipments
One of the murders tied to him occurred in November 2023 in Caledon, Ontario, where two family members were killed in retribution for a missing drug load. A surviving victim was left permanently injured.
The Web of Enablers
The newly unsealed indictment exposes the ecosystem around Wedding:
• Deepak Paradkar (criminal barrister)
Accused of advising Wedding to have the witness murdered to avoid extradition. Provided him with court filings and discovery that should never have been in his possession.
• Gursewak “Gus” Bal — operator of The Dirty News
Used a gangland-style website as an open-source intelligence tool, allegedly posting the victim’s photo in exchange for payment so hit teams could locate him.
• Edwin Basora-Hernandez (reggaeton artist)
Supplied contact information and logistical support tied to the murder plot.
• International runners, Colombian intermediaries, and cross-border liaisons
Several defendants acted as connective tissue between Mexico, Canada, Colombia, and the United States — the kind of network that allows cartel-aligned traffickers to operate as if geography were irrelevant.
Concurrent to the arrests, immigration actions were taken against additional associates, including a Latin pop singer whose husband is already charged in a separate murder conspiracy.
The Manhunt Intensifies
Despite the sweeping arrests, three defendants — including Wedding — remain fugitives. Authorities have issued a $15 million reward for information leading to Wedding’s arrest or conviction. Additional rewards of up to $2 million each have been offered for the assassins responsible for killing the witness in Medellín.
Investigators describe Wedding as “protected by cartel associates” and capable of ordering murders from exile. His fugitive status is considered a high-risk intelligence priority.
Operation Take Back America — The Broader Campaign
This indictment is part of a larger national crackdown known as Operation Take Back America, which aims to eliminate cartel networks, foreign gang penetration, human trafficking pipelines, and other transnational criminal organizations operating inside U.S. borders.
It also aligns with directives under the Homeland Security Task Force initiative, a whole-of-government effort to neutralize cross-border criminal syndicates responsible for drug trafficking, murder conspiracies, and corruption networks.
The Message Behind the Indictment
Federal officials emphasized that the murder of a witness crosses a line that leaves no gray area. When a defendant orders an assassination to control a criminal enterprise and intimidate future witnesses, the system is no longer dealing with a trafficker — it is dealing with a state-level threat to justice, sovereignty, and public safety.
Authorities are clear:
This will not stand.
This will not be ignored.
And this manhunt will not end until Ryan Wedding is in federal custody.
Wedding and his co-defendants all remain innocent until proven guilty. But the architecture of the enterprise laid out in this indictment suggests a criminal network operating at a level far beyond street crime — one that blended cartel alliances, corrupt legal access, targeted media manipulation, celebrity shielding, and cross-border violence into a single operation.

What a huge fall (No pun intended). I guess going over 50 mph on a ski slope wasn’t exciting enough for this guy. I hope they are able to locate him and his buddies. Those reward amounts should help. I’m always saddened when I hear a story like this. Going from being a highly trained athlete to this kind of life is beyond me. He’s left all of his friends behind except for those who helped him with his crimes. It’s also always hard to hear when a person brave enough to testify in a trial gets gunned down like this. What a waste.
As always, thank you for sharing the story, John.
You’re absolutely right, Chris — this is one of those cases that shows just how far someone can fall when they trade discipline for chaos. Going from Olympic-level training to armed robbery crews is a collapse that didn’t happen overnight, and you can see the damage ripple through every part of the story — the victims, the community, and especially the witness who lost his life for doing the right thing. That part hits the hardest.
I agree with you — the reward money should help pull more information forward. People like this don’t operate alone, and eventually someone in that circle talks. Hopefully they’re found before anyone else gets hurt.
Thank you for reading and for always bringing thoughtful insight, Chris. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this interesting post. How this guy went from what he was to what he is now is some mystery but I think you are spot on to think that this collapse didn’t happen overnight. I hope he is caught soon.
A post with a headline like this is hard to pass up. I was wondering if I had ever heard of this guy but hadn’t.
Thanks again and I hope you have a great day!
