A former IT contractor who weaponized his privileged knowledge of internal systems to wage a retaliatory digital assault on his employer has now admitted guilt — closing a case that highlights just how devastating insider threats remain to U.S. companies.
Federal prosecutors confirmed that Maxwell Schultz, 35, of Columbus, Ohio, pleaded guilty to computer fraud after carrying out a destructive attack on his former employer’s network. The attack followed his termination on May 14, 2021, and resulted in catastrophic operational downtime across the company’s national footprint.
According to court documents, Schultz leveraged his prior access and domain awareness to infiltrate the company’s systems shortly after being fired. He posed as another contractor to obtain active login credentials — a tactic frequently observed in both insider-driven sabotage cases and compromised-identity cyber incidents.
Once inside, Schultz deployed a PowerShell-based disruption script designed to reset approximately 2,500 employee and contractor passwords, instantly locking thousands of workers out of their computers across the United States. The mass-lockout triggered company-wide operational paralysis, derailing critical workflows, customer service functions, and internal communication systems.
Investigators determined that Schultz also attempted to cover his tracks, manually searching for log-deletion techniques and wiping multiple system logs, including PowerShell event histories — actions that clearly demonstrated intent to obstruct detection and delay incident response.
The attack inflicted more than $862,000 in confirmed losses, including downtime, forensic restoration efforts, security hardening measures, and labor costs associated with rebuilding the compromised network environment.
Federal prosecutors stated that Schultz admitted he launched the attack out of anger over being fired — an emotional motive that nonetheless translated into strategic sabotage with real-world consequences.
U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal has scheduled sentencing for January 30, 2026. Schultz faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
The FBI led the investigation.

What a story! I suppose it really doesn’t matter how this man was fired. There is no reason for this type of behavior. I hope his sentence fits his crime and that Justice is done.
Thank you this article, John.
You’re very welcome, Chris — and you’re absolutely right. No matter how someone feels about being fired, there’s never an excuse for this kind of retaliation. When an insider weaponizes their access, it hits harder than any outside attack, and the damage reaches thousands of people who had nothing to do with the situation. A sentence that reflects the seriousness of what he did is the least the system can deliver.
Thanks again, Chris, for sharing your thoughts — always greatly appreciated. I hope you have a great night. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you again for sharing this story. Revenge never works and, as you said, in this case it hurt many people who had nothing to do with his firing.
Thank you for your reply and your kind words and I hope you have a good night as well!
