The FBI’s Boston Division has recognized the Maine Resiliency Center with the Director’s Community Leadership Award for its extraordinary service to the people of Lewiston, Maine following the mass shootings of October 25, 2023. Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks presented the award to Danielle Parent, director of the center and representative of Community Concepts Inc., acknowledging a partnership defined by rapid response, coordinated care, and unwavering commitment to a wounded community.
The Director’s Community Leadership Award is one of the FBI’s highest public-service recognitions. Since 1990, only one recipient from each of the FBI’s 56 field offices is selected annually, making it a rare honor reserved for those who make a measurable impact on public safety, resilience, and community trust. This award places the Maine Resiliency Center among a distinguished group whose work directly strengthens the wellbeing of the American public.
In the aftermath of the Lewiston tragedy, the Center became an anchor point for victims, families, and survivors. Working alongside the FBI Boston Division and the Lewiston Police Department, the Center opened its doors just 19 days after the shooting — the second-fastest opening of a resiliency center in U.S. history. That rapid launch was more than a statistic; it was a lifeline. People who were facing trauma, loss, financial strain, and emotional shock needed immediate help, and the Center moved faster than anyone expected to provide it.
Inside the facility, survivors and families gained access to mental health services, financial assistance, spiritual care, and victim advocacy. The Center quickly evolved into a place where people could regroup, process, and receive guidance without judgment or delay. SAC Docks noted that the Center became a refuge for those who had nowhere else to turn, a place that ensured victims and families did not face the aftermath alone.
Danielle Parent emphasized that the award belongs not only to the Center but to the entire Lewiston community. The tragedy demanded unity, and Lewiston responded with strength that echoed far beyond the region. Every partner, volunteer, and support provider played a part in ensuring that trauma was met with stability, compassion, and collective resilience. Parent described the recognition as a testament to the community’s determination to heal together, rebuild together, and prove that even in the face of unimaginable loss, no one has to walk alone.
The award reinforces a truth that often goes unseen in national coverage: recovery is not automatic. It requires structure, resources, and people willing to stand with those who are hurting. The Maine Resiliency Center did exactly that — and continues to do so.

Congratulations to The Maine Resiliency Center. It sounds like it went to extremes to help the community after this tragic event. I had to look it up as there have been so many shootings in the past three years that I can’t keep track of them. I would hope that The Maine Resiliency Center would be a model for other communities that have to deal with similar events.
Thank you for this news.
You’re very welcome, Chris — and you’re right about that.
The Maine Resiliency Center stepped into an impossible moment and delivered support at a pace most communities never see. Opening their doors less than three weeks after the tragedy wasn’t just fast — it was lifesaving. They built structure where there was shock, and stability where there was chaos.
And you’re right about the broader picture too. With so many incidents in recent years, it becomes difficult to even track them all — which is exactly why centers like this matter. What they did in Lewiston should absolutely serve as a model for any community forced to face the same level of trauma. When the response is organized, compassionate, and immediate, it changes the trajectory for survivors and families in ways numbers can’t fully show.
Thanks again, Chris — I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this response. I enjoyed learning about this organization in spite of the fact that it was created by tragedy. It is always wonderful to see people helping other people.
Thanks again, John, and I hope you have a great day as well! 🙂
