CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — A Cape Girardeau County, Missouri man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting that he placed a hidden camera inside a residential bathroom when his victim was 12 years old.
Ross Andrew Schaefer, 50, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in June in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau to one count of production or attempted production of child pornography.
Schaefer admitted placing the hidden camera in the bathroom beginning at least in 2022.
The case involved recordings recovered during the investigation. Authorities discovered videos on Schaefer’s cellphone as well as on a thumb drive.
The 15-year prison sentence will be followed by 20 years of supervised release. That extended period of federal supervision will continue after Schaefer completes his prison term.
The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office, the Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services and the FBI investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Hunter prosecuted it.
The prosecution was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative established in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The initiative coordinates federal, state and local law-enforcement resources to identify victims, investigate offenders and prosecute crimes involving the exploitation of children. U.S. Attorneys’ Offices work alongside the Department of Justice Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and participating law-enforcement agencies as part of the program.
Schaefer’s case resulted in a federal conviction through his guilty plea, followed by a 15-year prison sentence and two decades of supervision after his release.
