Federal prosecutors announced that Christina Gates Thagard, 40, of Ocala, has entered a guilty plea for the May 2025 armed bank robbery that triggered a rapid multi-agency response and brought an abrupt end to her attempted getaway. Thagard faces up to 20 years in federal prison, with sentencing set for January 20, 2026 before the Middle District of Florida.
According to court filings, Thagard walked into a Marion County bank on the morning of May 3, 2025, obscured by a hat, hoodie, sunglasses, a surgical mask, and a single latex glove — a makeshift disguise intended to conceal both identity and forensic traces. Once at the teller window, she declared, “This is a robbery!” and asserted she was armed, threatening to use the weapon if the teller failed to comply.
Thagard then presented a written demand note instructing the teller to fill her bag with $50,000 in large bills, warning that any dye packs or alarms would trigger violence. The teller complied by placing $5,075 — the full contents of the drawer — along with a discreet GPS tracking device into Thagard’s purse. Surveillance images captured her movements inside the bank, documenting her approach, gestures, and the moment she issued the threat.
What Thagard did not anticipate was the speed of the response.
Within minutes, the tracking device began transmitting live data to law enforcement. Ocala Police Department officers converged on her vehicle before she could leave the area. The stop yielded the stolen cash, the tracking beacon, her disguise, and physical evidence linking her directly to the crime.
A forensic examination confirmed her fingerprint on the demand note, along with additional prints lifted from a door inside the bank — evidence consistent with direct contact during the robbery.
This case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Ocala Police Department, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Janette Swartzberg.
Federal authorities stated that the incident reflects the broader focus of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative designed to target violent offenders, weaponized intimidation, and criminal enterprises that destabilize communities. The operation coordinates federal and local resources to accelerate arrests, close cases, and dismantle organizations that exploit gaps in public safety infrastructure.
The plea marks a definitive turning point in the case and closes the investigative phase with a decisive federal outcome. Sentencing will determine the extent of Thagard’s prison term and the long-term consequences of the failed robbery attempt that began — and ended — within a span of minutes.
