A Tennessee man has been sentenced to more than four and a half years in federal prison for his role in helping a Memphis police officer conceal evidence connected to the kidnapping and fatal shooting of a civilian while the officer was on duty, federal authorities announced.
Joshua M. Rogers, 33, of Tennessee, was sentenced to 56 months in federal prison for assisting former Memphis Police Department officer Patric J. Ferguson in destroying evidence related to the January 5, 2021 killing of a man identified in court records as R.H.
According to court filings and admissions made as part of Rogers’ plea, Ferguson was on duty as a Memphis police officer when he kidnapped R.H. and later fatally shot him. Following the killing, Rogers knowingly assisted Ferguson in efforts to conceal the crime and obstruct law enforcement detection.
Prosecutors established that Rogers helped Ferguson purchase chains, padlocks, and cinderblocks, which were then used to weigh down the victim’s body. The two men transported the body to the Wolf River in Memphis, where it was disposed of in an attempt to prevent discovery and identification.
Federal officials emphasized that the acts went beyond passive assistance, describing Rogers’ conduct as deliberate participation in evidence destruction following a violent felony committed under color of law.
Ferguson, the former police officer at the center of the case, was sentenced on December 1 to 38 years in federal prison for his role in the kidnapping and murder.
The investigation was conducted jointly by the FBI’s Nashville Field Office and the Memphis Police Department. Federal authorities noted the case reflects continued scrutiny of violent misconduct involving sworn law enforcement personnel, particularly when efforts are made to conceal wrongdoing rather than report it.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Hartridge for the Western District of Tennessee, along with Trial Attorneys Tenette Smith and Sarah Armstrong of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division Criminal Section.
Federal officials reiterated that aiding in the destruction of evidence tied to a violent crime carries serious consequences, particularly when the underlying offense involves abuse of official authority.
TRJ NOTE
Cases involving evidence destruction connected to on-duty law enforcement violence strike at the core of public trust. Accountability in these matters extends beyond the individual who committed the violent act to those who knowingly assist in concealment. Federal sentencing in obstruction and evidence destruction cases reflects an enforcement posture that treats post-crime coverups as serious offenses capable of compounding harm and undermining justice.

“Cases involving evidence destruction connected to on-duty law enforcement violence strike at the core of public trust.”
This is so true. When something like this happens people are reminded that there are bad apples everywhere. A police uniform should demand respect as it should represent the law. When things like this happen, there can be little doubt that some of the public’s confidence in law-enforcement is eroded. Sometimes that confidence takes a long time to get back. We do need to be reminded that the vast majority of police are never involved in something like this. Still, stories like this are very hard to swallow. The one who committed the murder should have to serve his entire sentence and I think the other guy is getting off easy.
Thank you for this news.
I wish you a great night, John, and a great weekend as well. May God bless you and yours! 🙂
You’re very welcome, Chris — and you’re right to frame it this way. Cases involving evidence destruction tied to on-duty violence cut straight into the foundation of public trust. When authority is abused and then concealed, the damage isn’t limited to the crime itself; it ripples outward to everyone who wears the uniform honorably.
You’re also right to make the distinction that matters: the vast majority of law enforcement officers never engage in conduct like this, and many spend their careers doing difficult, often thankless work with integrity. That reality deserves to be stated clearly, especially when individual cases risk painting with too broad a brush.
At the same time, accountability has to be unequivocal when lines are crossed. Confidence, once eroded, takes time and transparency to rebuild. That’s why these cases are so hard to read — and why they must be documented carefully and without excuses.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment and for taking the time to read these articles. I appreciate you taking the time to engage, and I wish you a great night as well. God bless you and yours always. 🙏😎
Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my comment, John. It is always appreciated. Indeed, in cases like this, accountability has to be unequivocal when lines are crossed.
Thank you again for your reply and kind words. I hope you have a great day and may God bless you and your always as well! 🙂
This sounds more like a movie plot than real life, but I suppose they get the ideas somewhere!
Thank you very much. It does read like something out of a script, and that reaction makes sense. Unfortunately, cases like this show how reality can be far darker and more complex than fiction. When people abuse authority or assist in concealing violent crimes, the facts often feel surreal because they violate basic expectations of trust and responsibility.
That’s why cases like this matter to document carefully — not for shock value, but to show how real-world consequences unfold when lines are crossed. Thanks again for taking the time to read and comment. 😎
