A federal grand jury indictment has placed a 40-year-old Apopka, Florida woman at the center of an alleged fraud scheme that investigators say relied on phone and email communications to exploit an elderly victim. The case highlights continued federal focus on financial crimes that prey on older individuals through remote deception rather than in-person contact.
Xin Liu was indicted in the Northern District of Florida on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, an offense that carries significant federal penalties due to its reliance on interstate communications systems. Prosecutors allege that the conspiracy involved deliberate misuse of electronic communications to deceive and financially exploit an elderly individual, a category of victim recognized as particularly vulnerable under federal enforcement priorities.
Liu appeared for arraignment on December 23, 2025, in federal court in Gainesville, where the charges were formally presented. Court records indicate that the case has been set for a jury trial scheduled for January 28, 2026, before the district’s chief judge. If convicted, Liu faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.
Investigators have not publicly detailed the full scope of the alleged scheme, but authorities stated that the conspiracy relied on phone calls and email correspondence to carry out the fraud. Such methods are frequently used in elder fraud cases to create a sense of urgency, authority, or trust, often convincing victims to transfer funds or disclose sensitive financial information without face-to-face interaction.
The investigation was conducted through a coordinated effort involving federal and local agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service’s criminal investigative division, and the Gainesville Police Department. Prosecutors emphasized that collaboration between financial crime specialists and local law enforcement is critical in unraveling complex fraud conspiracies that may span multiple jurisdictions or involve layered financial transactions.
Federal authorities reiterated that an indictment represents an allegation, not a finding of guilt. As with all criminal defendants, Liu is presumed innocent unless and until the government proves the charges beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
The case is being prosecuted by an assistant United States attorney assigned to the Northern District of Florida, one of the federal districts responsible for enforcing criminal law across the region. As proceedings move forward, additional details regarding the alleged conspiracy, the financial impact on the victim, and the methods used to carry out the fraud are expected to emerge through court filings and testimony.
Elder fraud remains a growing concern for federal investigators, as phone- and email-based schemes continue to evolve and adapt to avoid detection. Authorities have repeatedly warned that these crimes often cause severe financial and emotional harm, particularly when victims lose retirement savings or are manipulated over extended periods of time.

Elder fraud is another one of those things that are not only bad but something I consider in the evil category depending on the severity of the fraud. Anyone who knowingly cheats older people out of what they have deserves to face the music. I hope justice is done in this case and that whatever was stolen from the victim is returned.
Thank you for this report.
You’re welcome, Chris. Elder fraud cuts deeper than ordinary financial crime because it targets people who are often less able to recover from the damage. In many cases, what’s taken isn’t just money, but security, independence, and peace of mind built over a lifetime.
Cases like this deserve close attention and a clear accounting of what happened, how it was done, and who was responsible. The legal process exists to sort that out, including whether restitution is possible and what consequences apply.
Thanks again, Chris — always greatly appreciated. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and I appreciate your response. You’ve highlighted the reasons that this crime is particularly bad.
These cases should be treated just as you have described it.
Thanks again, John.
