A former eighth-grade teacher from St. Augustine has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison following an undercover FBI operation that uncovered an attempted scheme to sexually exploit a minor and record the abuse on video.
According to federal court records, Matthew Christopher Yates, 31, of Hastings, Florida, was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan to 15 years in federal custody, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Yates was also ordered to register as a sex offender. He previously entered a guilty plea on August 27, 2025.
At the time of his arrest on March 11, 2022, Yates was employed as an eighth-grade teacher at a school in St. Augustine, placing him in a position of authority and trust over children of the same age group as the intended victim.
Undercover Operation and Online Grooming
Court documents detail that on February 11, 2022, an undercover agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Jacksonville initiated contact with Yates while posing online as a 14-year-old child. The agent responded to a post on a social media application made by a user identifying himself as “English teacher,” later confirmed to be Yates.
During the initial exchange, the undercover persona disclosed her age and grade level. Despite this, Yates identified himself as a teacher and proceeded to engage in sexually suggestive dialogue, including comments explicitly referencing a teacher-student dynamic. Investigators documented a progression from flirtation to sexualized messaging, photo exchanges, and explicit descriptions of intended sexual acts.
Escalation to Planned Abuse and Recording
Between February 22 and March 11, 2022, communications intensified. Yates transmitted sexually explicit images and requested an in-person meeting. On March 8, he proposed specific sexual acts and later suggested that the encounter be recorded on video, stating that doing so would allow the child to “remember it better.”
Yates told the undercover agent that he would use his cellphone to record the sexual activity and claimed he would delete the video afterward, a statement prosecutors cited as evidence of premeditation and intent to produce child sexual abuse material.
Arrest and Admissions
On March 11, 2022, Yates traveled to a prearranged location in Jacksonville to meet the purported minor and was taken into custody by FBI agents. A search revealed condoms and a cellphone in his possession.
During a post-arrest interview, Yates admitted he believed he was meeting a 14-year-old girl and acknowledged plans to engage in sexual activity. He further admitted that the idea to record the encounter originated with him.
Institutional and Legal Significance
The sentence reflects the severity with which federal courts treat attempt offenses involving child exploitation, particularly when the defendant occupies a role that grants proximity to minors. Federal prosecutors emphasized that no physical contact with an actual child is required for conviction when intent, planning, and overt acts are clearly established.
The case was investigated by the FBI’s Jacksonville Division and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Rodney Brown.
Enforcement Landscape
This prosecution was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice effort focused on identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals who sexually exploit children. Federal authorities continue to emphasize undercover operations as a primary tool for disrupting online grooming and preempting hands-on abuse.
Officials reiterated that educators and others in trusted positions are held to heightened accountability when exploiting their access or perceived authority over minors.

ugh that’s so gross, i’m glad he got caught
Rojie, it’s definitely disturbing and makes good teachers look bad. Accountability and prevention are the priority, and this was stopped before further harm could occur. Thank you for reading and commenting — it’s always greatly appreciated. I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
This was excellent undercover work that saved who knows how many young people from living with potential mental and emotional problems for years. Congratulations to all involved in this arrest. Anyone in a position of trust who tries to use that for this kind of activity needs to serve time and the sentence here seems fair to me. I really appreciated this:
“The sentence reflects the severity with which federal courts treat attempt offenses involving child exploitation, particularly when the defendant occupies a role that grants proximity to minors.”
I am so glad our society views these kinds of things as evil. I pray that never changes.
Thank you for all of the reports tonight, John. You have covered so many different types of things but all pertaining to criminal activity and good law enforcement work. I appreciate your efforts. I hope you have a great evening and may God bless you and yours! 🙂
You’re very welcome, Chris. You’re right—this was strong investigative work, and it’s sobering to consider how much harm may have been prevented because of it. Cases involving positions of trust deserve serious consequences, and it’s important that the justice system continues to treat them with the gravity they demand.
I truly appreciate your thoughtful engagement and your kind words about the coverage tonight. We cover these different types of cases because law enforcement has been receiving a very unfair portrayal in recent years, across both mainstream and independent outlets, regardless of political alignment. That trend is concerning. In today’s world, dismissing or undermining law enforcement would be disastrous.
Our goal is to show that beyond the noise and the spin, law enforcement is still doing its job and holding criminals accountable. Thanks again, Chris. I hope you have a great evening as well, and may God bless you and yours always. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your thoughtful response. It is unfortunate that law enforcement seems to be constantly blamed when people put themselves in danger and something bad happens. My question is: “Why were they in that situation to begin with?” I’ve seen multiple videos where people do not listen to simple directions they are given by an officer even after they are repeated several times. I think law enforcement is one of the hardest jobs out there and I admire anyone who puts on a badge. There will always be a few bad eggs but when considering the thousands of men and women who do an outstanding job, one has to look at the overall picture.
You are doing a good job with your stated goal. It’s hard to believe that it wasn’t that long ago that some people wanted less law enforcement. They must live in a different world than the one I’m in.
Thanks again, John, and thank you for your kind words. I hope you have a great weekend and may God bless you and yours! 🙂
