Federal case exposes abuse of professional trust, encrypted platforms, and the enduring harm of CSAM trafficking
A federal sentencing in California has closed a disturbing case involving the exploitation of encrypted communications and the abuse of professional trust. Khursheed Haider, 50, of Roseville, California, a practicing pulmonologist in the Sacramento region, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Dena M. Coggins and announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California. Haider’s conviction underscores how CSAM offenses are prosecuted not only as possession crimes, but as distribution-driven offenses that perpetuate ongoing victimization.
ENCRYPTED PLATFORMS AND DISTRIBUTION ACTIVITY
According to court records, Haider used the encrypted messaging application Wire to post, distribute, and actively request videos and images depicting the sexual abuse of prepubescent boys and girls, including infants and toddlers. Federal investigators determined that the conduct went beyond passive possession, involving deliberate sharing within online networks dedicated to CSAM circulation.
When agents executed a search warrant, they recovered more than 600 images and videos of child sexual abuse material from Haider’s electronic devices. Prosecutors emphasized that each instance of distribution contributes to the repeated exploitation of victims, as CSAM images and videos are repeatedly consumed, traded, and resurfaced over time.
ABUSE OF POSITION AND PUBLIC TRUST
Haider’s case carries additional weight because of his professional role. As a physician entrusted with patient care, he occupied a position that demands ethical responsibility and public confidence. Federal authorities stressed that professional status does not insulate individuals from accountability—and, in cases involving child exploitation, can intensify the breach of trust involved.
Law enforcement officials noted that individuals who appear outwardly established, respected, or family-oriented are not exempt from scrutiny. In fact, such appearances can mask ongoing criminal conduct, making detection more difficult and reinforcing the importance of proactive investigative work.
INVESTIGATION AND PROSECUTION
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hitt.
Federal authorities confirmed that the matter was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program coordinates federal, state, and local resources to identify offenders, dismantle distribution networks, and support victim identification and rescue efforts.
WHY THIS CASE MATTERS
CSAM cases involving distribution are treated as particularly serious under federal law because they extend harm beyond the initial abuse. Images and videos become instruments of repeated trauma, resurfacing indefinitely as they circulate across digital platforms.
The use of encrypted applications illustrates a broader challenge facing investigators: offenders increasingly rely on privacy-focused tools to obscure activity. Despite that, federal authorities continue to penetrate such networks through coordinated digital forensics, undercover operations, and international cooperation.
Sentences in these cases are designed not only to punish, but to incapacitate offenders and signal that encryption does not equal immunity.
TRJ VERDICT
This case is not solely about one individual’s criminal conduct. It is about how abuse persists through distribution, how trust can be weaponized against the vulnerable, and how digital platforms can become conduits for ongoing harm.
A nine-year federal sentence reflects recognition that CSAM offenses are not victimless or static crimes. Every shared file extends the life of the abuse. Every download renews it.
Positions of trust do not mitigate responsibility—they heighten it. And encrypted platforms do not negate accountability.
The outcome here affirms a core principle of enforcement: those who traffic in the exploitation of children will be pursued, identified, and removed from society—regardless of status, profession, or facade.

People like this guy are sick. It sounds like he was making a good living and the dark world of CSAM was a temptation for him. I don’t understand how people get to this point. I appreciate all of those responsible for apprehending this guy. Nine years seems short to me. Perhaps in that time he will learn that the greatest forgiveness for his crimes can come from God above, and with it a changed life. He needs to be held responsible for this awful business.
Thank you for this report!
You’re very welcome, Chris — I appreciate your honesty and the seriousness with which you’re approaching this. You’re right: cases like this are deeply disturbing, especially when they involve someone who outwardly appeared stable, successful, and trusted. It’s a reminder that status, education, or profession do not insulate a person from moral collapse.
Accountability matters here, and the sentence reflects the legal system’s response, though many people understandably feel it falls short of the harm caused. Justice in this world is often incomplete, but responsibility still must be enforced, and I’m grateful to those who worked to stop the ongoing exploitation tied to this case as well. Sad times we live in.
You’re also right that forgiveness, if it comes at all, is a matter between the individual and God — and it requires genuine repentance and change, not words alone. Earthly justice and spiritual reckoning are not the same thing, and both have their place.
Thank you again for engaging with the report so thoughtfully. It’s always greatly appreciated. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this response. You are so right that “Earthly justice and spiritual reckoning are not the same thing, and both have their place.” This man will now have plenty of time to search for that forgiveness if he so chooses. I think that should be his priority.
I’m glad he was caught and that law enforcement contained another one of these guys into evil stuff like this.
Thank you again and God’s blessings…
