On an otherwise uneventful Monday, the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences found itself grappling with a digital storm. A sophisticated cyber onslaught had pierced through the university’s formidable IT defenses, leading to a comprehensive shutdown of its network systems.
This incident marks the latest in a series of cyber sieges that have beleaguered German institutions of higher learning, with a notable focus on those dedicated to applied sciences.
The exact mechanics of the breach remain shrouded in mystery. Reports indicate that the cyber incursion manifested at approximately 8pm on Saturday, usurping the university’s standard web presence with a stark notification of compromise.
In a statement, the university acknowledged the breach, “Despite layers of advanced digital armor, nefarious elements infiltrated segments of our IT stronghold.” The incident was promptly reported to law enforcement and regulatory bodies.
As a precautionary measure, the university severed external connections to its IT framework and suspended select services. The ripple effect of the intrusion was so profound that it even immobilized the campus elevators, citing safety concerns.
At present, the full scope of the cyberattack remains indeterminate. The university lamented, “The digital wounds inflicted are deep, and thus, we cannot foresee when normalcy will return to our IT services.”
Home to approximately 15,000 scholars, the timing of the cyberattack—amidst summer recess—may have mitigated its impact on the student body. Nevertheless, academic activities persist on campus grounds.
Currently, the university’s virtual gates are closed, halting online enrollments and severing email and telephonic communications.
This cyber event is not an isolated phenomenon but part of a disturbing trend targeting German ‘Hochschules’—institutions renowned for their contributions to engineering, technology, commerce, and design.
Earlier this year, Hochschule Kempten too found itself at the mercy of cybercriminals. This pattern of digital predation has also ensnared other applied science universities in Kaiserslautern, Saxony-Anhalt’s Harz University, Ruhr West University, the EU/FH European University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen, to name a few.
