ALASKA REPORTS RECORD CYBERCRIME LOSSES AS FBI DATA SHOWS SURGE IN CRYPTOCURRENCY AND AI-DRIVEN FRAUD: 2025 FIGURES REVEAL SHARP YEAR-OVER-YEAR INCREASE

New data released through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) identifies a significant escalation in cyber-enabled financial crime across the United States, with Alaska recording its highest reported losses to date. The 2025 Internet Crime Report documents more than 1 million complaints nationwide, with total losses approaching $21 billion, reflecting a 26% increase compared to the previous year.

Within Alaska, 3,202 complaints were filed, resulting in nearly $40 million in reported losses. That figure represents a 52% increase from 2024, with losses rising by more than $13.6 million year over year. The data indicates that approximately 46% of total reported losses in the state—exceeding $18.6 million—were tied to cryptocurrency-related schemes.

The report identifies cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence-related fraud as the most financially damaging categories, signaling a continued shift toward technologically advanced exploitation methods. These schemes often leverage digital platforms, automated communication, and social engineering techniques to extract funds from victims under false pretenses.

The highest financial losses in Alaska were concentrated in three primary fraud categories. Investment fraud accounted for approximately $13.2 million, driven by deceptive schemes promising high returns with minimal risk. Confidence and romance fraud followed at $7.1 million, involving manipulation of personal relationships to solicit money or sensitive information. Business email compromise (BEC) resulted in roughly $7 million in losses, targeting organizations and individuals engaged in routine financial transactions through compromised communication channels.

Demographic data within the report indicates that individuals over the age of 60 experienced the greatest financial impact, accounting for approximately $16.2 million in losses. Within this group, cryptocurrency-related fraud and investment scams represented the largest share of reported incidents, alongside confidence-based schemes and tech support fraud totaling more than $2.1 million.

The IC3 continues to function as a central reporting and intelligence hub for cyber-enabled criminal activity, aggregating complaint data from the public and providing analysis used for enforcement, prevention, and awareness efforts. The sustained increase in reported losses reflects both the scale of ongoing criminal activity and expanded reporting participation across affected populations.

Federal authorities emphasize that immediate reporting remains critical in mitigating financial damage. Victims are advised to notify financial institutions without delay and document all relevant details, including communication methods, transaction pathways, and identifying information associated with the incident.

This data is a broader trend of increasing financial exposure tied to digital interaction, with fraud schemes evolving alongside emerging technologies and payment systems. The scale and growth of losses recorded in 2025 place cyber-enabled crime among the most significant financial threats currently impacting individuals and businesses nationwide.
