WESTERN DISTRICT OF MISSOURI RECOVERS NEARLY $10 MILLION IN CRIMINAL AND CIVIL ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS IN FY 2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Federal prosecutors in the Western District of Missouri reported the recovery of $9,726,475.43 in criminal and civil enforcement actions during Fiscal Year 2025, reflecting sustained efforts to enforce court-ordered penalties, restitution, and financial accountability tied to federal cases across the district.

According to figures released Monday, $9,042,015.71 of the total was collected through criminal actions, while $684,459.72 was recovered through civil actions. The collections represent payments tied to fines, restitution orders, assessments, and other monetary penalties imposed by federal courts.

In addition to direct collections, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reported $5,514,787 recovered through asset forfeiture actions during the same fiscal year. Forfeited assets deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund are used to compensate crime victims where applicable and to support authorized law enforcement activities, including investigations and prevention efforts.

Federal officials emphasized that the recovery process is not automatic and often requires sustained follow-up after sentencing or judgment. Dedicated enforcement units track outstanding debts, locate assets, and pursue lawful collection mechanisms to ensure that court orders translate into actual recovery rather than symbolic penalties.

Beyond district-specific cases, the Western District of Missouri also worked jointly with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components to collect an additional $8,624,051.35 in shared enforcement actions during FY 2025. Of that amount, $52,264.86 stemmed from criminal matters, while $8,571,786.49 resulted from civil actions, underscoring the scale of multi-district cooperation in complex financial enforcement cases.

Under federal law, restitution is mandatory in qualifying cases where victims have suffered physical injury or financial loss. Restitution payments are directed to victims, while criminal fines and felony assessments are deposited into the Crime Victims Fund, which supports federal and state compensation and assistance programs nationwide.

Prosecutors noted that monetary enforcement plays a critical role in ensuring that criminal activity does not remain profitable and that civil violations carry tangible consequences. In practice, collections serve both a corrective function for victims and a deterrent function for future offenders.

The FY 2025 figures reflect the ongoing role of federal prosecutors not only in litigating cases, but in enforcing judgments long after court proceedings conclude, reinforcing the principle that financial accountability is a core component of justice rather than an afterthought.
