CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI — A former Missouri kindergarten teacher has pleaded guilty in federal court after admitting to possessing and distributing child sex abuse material, according to court records filed in the Eastern District of Missouri.

Erika L. Morton, 37, formerly of Farmington, Missouri, entered a guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau. As part of her plea, Morton admitted to sending child sex abuse material through the Kik Messenger application, a mobile messaging platform frequently cited in online exploitation investigations.

Investigation and Admission

The case originated in February 2025, when the Missouri State Highway Patrol received a cybertip reporting that a Kik account had uploaded multiple video files depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Investigators traced the account activity to Morton.

On June 17, 2025, law enforcement officials interviewed Morton, who admitted that she was the user associated with the Kik account and that she had sent the material. Court documents state that Morton also acknowledged using her personal cell phone to obtain the images while at her residence in Ste. Genevieve County.

Employment Background

At the time of the offense, Morton had previously been employed as a kindergarten teacher, a factor that raises additional concern given her access to and responsibility for young children. Court filings do not indicate that the conduct occurred on school property or involved students under her supervision, but the case underscores ongoing risks associated with individuals in trusted caregiving roles.

Potential Sentence
