Cross-Border Sextortion Ring Linked to U.S. Teen Death: Third Suspect Extradited from Nigeria to Face Federal Charges

A transnational digital extortion network tied to the death of a young man in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has entered a new prosecutorial phase following the extradition of Afeez Olatunji Adewale, a 26-year-old Nigerian national now in federal custody in Philadelphia. The indictment charges Adewale with participation in a coordinated sextortion enterprise involving wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. Federal authorities allege that the operation targeted minors and young adults across the United States through social engineering campaigns designed to coerce victims into transmitting sensitive material under threat of reputational exposure.

Adewale was arrested in Nigeria on August 17, 2023, during a multinational enforcement initiative led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His transfer to U.S. jurisdiction on February 13, 2026, was executed through coordination with the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs and Nigerian security partners, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Following extradition, Adewale appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lynne A. Sitarski in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for initial proceedings.

Prosecutorial filings connect Adewale to a broader criminal architecture already responsible for prior convictions involving co-defendants Imoleayo Samuel Aina, also known as “Alice Dave,” and Samuel Olasunkanmi Abiodun. Both individuals were extradited to the United States in August 2024 after being linked to the same extortion framework. Abiodun entered guilty pleas on counts of wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy in June 2025 and received a five-year custodial sentence from Joel H. Slomsky. Aina subsequently pleaded guilty to cyberstalking, interstate threats to injure reputation, receipt of extortion proceeds, and associated laundering offenses, resulting in a six-year federal prison term issued in October 2025.

Investigators have described the group’s methodology as a financially motivated coercion model operating across encrypted messaging platforms and social media environments. Victims were approached through impersonated identities or fabricated peer profiles, often under the guise of private conversation requests. Once communication channels were established, suspects allegedly initiated image-based manipulation cycles in which victims were persuaded or deceived into sharing personal media content. Immediate threats of public dissemination followed, paired with demands for digital payment routed through anonymized transfer services or cryptocurrency channels.

Federal case development indicates that financial proceeds generated through the scheme were layered through accounts and transfer mechanisms intended to obscure origin and ownership before conversion or withdrawal. The operational structure relied on distributed roles, including initial contact operators, payment handlers, and account facilitators, reflecting an increasingly modular approach to online extortion activity observed in cross-border cybercrime networks.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Fort Washington Resident Agency in partnership with local law enforcement from Abington Township, Pennsylvania. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Brown is assigned to prosecute the matter in federal court.

The indictment against Adewale constitutes formal allegations. Determination of guilt remains subject to adjudication under federal judicial process.
