A multi-agency federal investigation remains active following the fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of February 22, 2026, at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach County, Florida. FBI Miami, working in coordination with the United States Secret Service, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and FBI Charlotte, continues to develop a comprehensive timeline and evidentiary record surrounding the incident.
The deceased individual has been identified as Austin Tucker Martin, 21, of Moore County, North Carolina.
Immediately following the shooting, FBI Miami secured the scene. Members of the FBI Evidence Response Team conducted systematic forensic processing, including scene photography, trajectory documentation, physical evidence collection, and preliminary reconstruction procedures. The scene was formally released Sunday evening after primary forensic collection was completed.
Parallel investigative efforts were initiated in North Carolina. FBI Charlotte executed follow-up investigative activity at Martin’s residence in Moore County, where agents collected additional evidentiary materials relevant to pre-incident planning, communications, and travel preparation. That scene was released early Monday morning following processing.
FBI Miami also located and seized the subject’s vehicle. The vehicle was transported to a secured federal facility for advanced forensic analysis, including digital extraction from onboard systems, trace evidence recovery, and mapping of route data where available.
Investigators are now engaged in layered analytical review across multiple domains:
• Interviews with family members, friends, acquaintances, and potential recent contacts
• Digital forensic examination of electronic devices
• Social media activity review and metadata preservation
• Financial transaction tracing and purchase reconstruction
• Geographic route mapping from Moore County, North Carolina, to Palm Beach County, Florida
• Neighborhood canvassing in relevant jurisdictions
Federal authorities have confirmed that one core objective of the investigation is to construct a precise movement timeline, including stops, fuel purchases, lodging, retail transactions, and personal interactions occurring during the interstate drive.
The case involves coordination between federal protective services and local law enforcement due to the location’s status and protective jurisdiction. Officer-involved shooting investigations in federally protected environments undergo dual review protocols: one addressing the underlying criminal conduct of the subject, and another examining use-of-force procedures under applicable standards.
At this stage, no official motive has been publicly established. Investigative focus remains on determining intent, behavioral indicators, digital footprint patterns, and whether any additional individuals had knowledge of or involvement in Martin’s travel or actions.
The FBI is requesting information from the public. Individuals with knowledge relevant to the subject’s movements or communications are encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit information via the FBI tip portal at: https://tips.fbi.gov
The investigation remains active. FBI Miami, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Secret Service, and assisting field offices continue coordinated review of forensic, digital, and investigative findings.
The matter remains under active federal review pending completion of forensic analysis and formal investigative findings.

It’s good to read about the different branches of law enforcement working together. You hear a lot of stories, I know TV and film blow it out of proportion,, of the different agencies arguing over jurisdiction that one wonders how anyone gets apprehended.
Thank you very much, Michael. That’s a fair observation.
Television dramatizes jurisdictional conflict because it creates tension and narrative friction. In reality, most major investigations today — particularly those involving cybercrime, trafficking, organized crime, or interstate offenses — are structured around task forces specifically designed to prevent those conflicts.
Joint Terrorism Task Forces, Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, and multi-agency cyber units exist to consolidate authority, not compete for it. Federal, state, and local agencies each bring different legal authorities, intelligence systems, and operational capabilities. When those resources are synchronized, investigations move more efficiently and cases are built on stronger evidentiary foundations.
Jurisdictional disagreements can occur, but they are typically resolved through established interagency protocols and prosecutorial coordination long before they affect an arrest or indictment.
What the public sees as a single agency action is often the result of months of coordinated intelligence sharing and structured cooperation behind the scenes.
Thanks again for raising that point, Michael. I hope you have a great night. 😎
You’re welcome John, though I do remember hearing of an incident back in the 50s where a state police officer and a local county officer responded to a call but instead of working together, they argued over jurisdiction to the point of it becoming a fist fight. The local media had a field day with that.
That sounds like one of those stories that stuck because it was so unusual back then.
In the 1950s, interagency coordination wasn’t nearly as structured as it is today, so overlapping authority could create friction. When something like that happened publicly, the media naturally ran with it.
Modern task forces and formal agreements were built largely to prevent exactly that kind of conflict from getting in the way of public safety. It’s an interesting piece of small law enforcement history.
Appreciate you sharing that, Michael.
