The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Norfolk Field Office has announced a recruitment information session aimed at veterans and currently serving members of the U.S. military who are interested in transitioning into federal law enforcement careers.
The event, scheduled for March 2026, is designed for active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard personnel, and military veterans seeking to learn more about careers as FBI Special Agents.
Officials say the session will provide detailed information about the Special Agent role, eligibility requirements, physical fitness standards, security clearance requirements, and the federal hiring process for applicants with military backgrounds.
Military Experience and Federal Law Enforcement
The FBI has long recruited candidates from the military community due to the operational skills developed through service, including leadership, mission planning, intelligence analysis, and high-pressure decision-making.
Military veterans frequently transition into investigative roles within federal agencies because of their experience in areas such as counterterrorism operations, intelligence gathering, cybersecurity, logistics coordination, and crisis response.
According to FBI Norfolk leadership, the Hampton Roads region—home to major military installations including Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base—represents one of the largest concentrations of military personnel in the United States.
Dominique Evans, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Norfolk Field Office, noted that many individuals leaving military service are well positioned to pursue federal investigative careers.
The Bureau frequently seeks candidates with backgrounds in military intelligence, cyber operations, aviation, engineering, language expertise, and tactical operations, though applicants from a wide range of professional fields may qualify.
Special Agent Career Path
FBI Special Agents serve as federal criminal investigators responsible for enforcing more than 300 federal statutes across a wide range of national security and criminal investigations.
Agents may work on cases involving:
- Counterterrorism
- Counterintelligence
- Cybercrime
- Organized crime
- Public corruption
- Violent crime
- Financial fraud
- Child exploitation investigations
Special Agents are required to complete training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, where recruits undergo intensive instruction in investigative procedures, firearms training, defensive tactics, legal procedures, intelligence operations, and physical conditioning.
Application Requirements
The FBI requires Special Agent candidates to meet several baseline criteria, including:
- U.S. citizenship
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- At least two years of professional work experience (or one year with an advanced degree)
- Ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance
- Passing a rigorous physical fitness assessment and background investigation
Military experience can provide a competitive advantage during the selection process due to prior exposure to federal security environments and mission-critical operations.
Recruitment Session Details
The Norfolk recruitment session will provide attendees with a detailed overview of the FBI’s hiring process and allow participants to speak directly with FBI recruiters about career pathways and application strategies.
Officials say the session will cover:
- The Special Agent application timeline
- Physical fitness and training expectations
- Investigative career opportunities
- Translating military experience into federal law enforcement qualifications
Individuals interested in attending must register by March 14, 2026, by contacting the FBI Norfolk recruiting team.
Registration and inquiries can be submitted via email at:
Additional information about FBI careers and eligibility requirements can be found at the Bureau’s official recruitment portal.
Federal officials encourage transitioning service members to consider federal law enforcement careers as a continuation of their public service mission.
