Federal authorities have renewed their search for an international fugitive accused of murdering his young wife inside a Maryland workplace, placing him on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and increasing the reward for information leading to his capture.
The suspect, Bhadreshkumar Chetanbhai Patel, has been sought by investigators since April 2015, when his wife, Palak Patel, was killed inside the donut shop where the couple worked the overnight shift in Hanover, Maryland, near the Arundel Mills commercial district.
Patel became the 514th individual added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, a national program designed to focus public attention on fugitives considered especially dangerous or difficult to locate.
Authorities warn that Patel should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.
Investigators believe the murder occurred shortly before midnight on April 12, 2015, inside a back room of the donut shop located at 7567 Arundel Mills Boulevard.
According to investigators, Palak Patel — who was 21 years old at the time — was attacked while working the night shift. Evidence collected at the scene indicated that she had been stabbed multiple times, and investigators believe her husband carried out the killing before fleeing the area.
Security footage later captured Patel leaving the business immediately after the attack.
After departing the shop, authorities say Patel walked across the street to the apartment he shared with his wife, where he collected a small amount of cash and personal belongings before leaving the area.
Investigators later determined that Patel hailed a taxi and traveled from Maryland to a hotel near Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, arriving at approximately 3:00 a.m.
Hotel records indicate that Patel checked into the hotel with no luggage and only the clothes he was wearing.
Roughly seven hours later, he checked out of the hotel and boarded a shuttle heading to Newark Penn Station, a major rail transit hub serving Amtrak and regional rail lines.
That morning in April 2015 remains the last confirmed sighting of Patel.
Since that time, investigators believe the fugitive may have left the United States or may be hiding within communities where he has previous connections.
Authorities have identified potential ties linking Patel to New Jersey, Kentucky, Georgia, Illinois, and India, raising the possibility that he may have used transportation networks or family connections to evade capture.
Investigators have also examined whether Patel may have crossed the northern border into Canada, where international travel routes could allow him to reach other countries.
At the time of the murder, both Patel and his wife were living in the United States on visas that had expired roughly one month earlier, according to investigators familiar with the case.
Authorities believe tensions surrounding their immigration status may have played a role in the events leading up to the killing. Investigators have theorized that Palak Patel had expressed interest in returning to India, while her husband reportedly opposed the idea.
Following the murder, law enforcement agencies launched a multi-state investigation that quickly developed into an international fugitive search.
Local authorities issued an arrest warrant in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, charging Patel with multiple offenses including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and use of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure.
Within days, federal authorities issued an additional warrant charging Patel with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, allowing federal investigators to pursue the case across state and international borders.
Despite extensive investigative efforts over the past decade, Patel has not been located.
Authorities believe he may have relied on extended family networks or international travel routes to remain hidden.
To intensify the search, the FBI added Patel to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in April 2017, significantly increasing the national exposure of the case.
The program, established in 1950, is one of the longest-running and most recognized fugitive search initiatives in U.S. law enforcement history. The list highlights fugitives whose capture is considered a priority due to the severity of their crimes and the challenges involved in locating them.
Since the program began, hundreds of fugitives have been apprehended, many following tips from members of the public who recognized suspects from nationwide publicity campaigns.
In Patel’s case, the FBI has raised the reward for information leading to his arrest to as much as $1 million, reflecting both the seriousness of the crime and the length of time he has evaded capture.
Federal investigators say the reward increase is intended to generate new leads and encourage individuals who may have information about Patel’s whereabouts to come forward.
Authorities emphasize that anyone who recognizes Patel or has information related to his location should not attempt to approach him directly.
Instead, individuals are encouraged to contact federal authorities immediately through the FBI’s national tip line or through confidential reporting channels.
Investigators say the case remains active, and federal agents continue to pursue leads both within the United States and internationally.
The murder of Palak Patel remains one of the most significant fugitive cases handled by investigators in the Baltimore region, and authorities say they remain committed to locating the suspect and bringing him before the courts.
