FEDERAL AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES ISSUE WARNING ON DRONE RESTRICTIONS AROUND COORS FIELD DURING GAME DAYS

Federal and local law enforcement agencies are reinforcing airspace restrictions around major Denver sports venues, citing multiple recent violations involving unauthorized drone activity during professional sporting events.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Denver Police Department, and the Colorado Rockies organization have issued a joint reminder that drone operations are strictly limited within designated areas surrounding Coors Field on game days. Authorities confirmed that during the opening homestand of the season, more than half a dozen drone operators were identified operating in violation of federal aviation regulations.

All identified violations have been referred to the FAA for formal investigation. Enforcement actions are expected to follow under strengthened federal oversight policies governing unmanned aircraft systems operating in restricted or sensitive airspace.

Under current regulations, airspace within a three-mile radius of Coors Field and Empower Field at Mile High is restricted beginning one hour before the start of a Major League Baseball or National Football League event and extending until one hour after the event concludes. These restrictions fall under Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), which are federally enforced no-fly zones implemented to protect public safety and secure high-density gatherings.

Unauthorized drone operations within these zones are classified as both illegal and hazardous due to the risk posed to stadium occupants, law enforcement operations, and potential air traffic in the vicinity. Authorities have emphasized that violations are not limited to proximity alone but also include failure to comply with federal operational requirements tied to drone identification and airspace awareness.

The FAA has expanded enforcement measures tied to drone misuse. Civil penalties can reach up to $75,000 per violation, with additional administrative actions including confiscation of the drone and revocation of operator certifications. Criminal penalties may also be pursued in cases involving reckless operation or use of drones in furtherance of unlawful activity, carrying fines up to $100,000 and potential imprisonment of up to one year.

Federal regulations also require most drones operating within U.S. airspace to transmit Remote ID signals, allowing authorities to identify and track operators in real time. Disabling or failing to comply with Remote ID requirements constitutes a separate federal offense and can result in additional penalties beyond airspace violations. Law enforcement agencies utilize multiple detection systems capable of identifying drone activity regardless of Remote ID status.

To support compliance, drone operators are directed to use FAA-approved airspace awareness tools such as B4UFLY, which provide real-time data on flight restrictions, TFRs, and controlled airspace boundaries. These tools are considered a baseline requirement for responsible drone operation near populated or regulated zones.

Enforcement of these restrictions is supported by coordinated federal and local efforts under authorities granted by the SAFER SKIES Act, enabling the use of counter-drone technologies to detect, track, and mitigate unauthorized aerial activity near protected venues. Trained personnel are actively deployed at major event sites to monitor compliance and respond to violations.

Authorities advise that any observed unauthorized or unsafe drone activity near event venues should be reported immediately to emergency services or federal law enforcement channels.
