NEPHEW OF FEDERAL INMATE CHARGED AFTER ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE SUBOXONE INTO PUERTO RICO DETENTION CENTER

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico — A Puerto Rico man has been arrested on a federal criminal complaint after authorities alleged he attempted to smuggle Suboxone into the Metropolitan Detention Center in Guaynabo while visiting a relative incarcerated at the federal facility.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s San Juan Field Office announced that Jan Carlos Correa-Tavarez has been charged following an alleged attempt to introduce contraband into the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) on June 27, 2026.

According to the criminal complaint, Correa-Tavarez is the nephew of a current federal inmate housed at the detention center. Federal authorities allege he attempted to bring Suboxone, a prescription medication commonly used to treat opioid use disorder, into the facility during a scheduled visit.

Detention center security personnel reportedly detected the suspected contraband before it entered the institution. Officials immediately separated Correa-Tavarez from the visiting area and notified federal law enforcement authorities.

Special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the detention center and, following coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico, arrested Correa-Tavarez and filed a federal criminal complaint before a United States magistrate judge.

Federal authorities have not publicly disclosed how the Suboxone was allegedly concealed or the quantity involved.

The introduction of contraband into correctional facilities presents significant security concerns because prohibited items can contribute to violence, illegal drug distribution, coercion among inmates, and other criminal activity within detention centers. Federal detention facilities employ multiple security measures, including visitor screening, surveillance systems, searches, and intelligence gathering, to detect and prevent the introduction of unauthorized items.

Suboxone contains buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, and naloxone, an opioid antagonist. Although it is widely prescribed to help individuals recover from opioid addiction under medical supervision, the medication is considered contraband when possessed or introduced into a correctional institution without authorization.

“Introduction of contraband into a federal detention center is a serious violation that threatens the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and its inmates,” said Carlos R. Goris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI San Juan Field Office. “We are committed to working with our federal partners to ensure that those who engage in criminal activity within the prison system are held accountable.”

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico.

Because the case was initiated through a criminal complaint, the allegations have not been proven in court. Correa-Tavarez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
