A federal charge has been filed in the District of New Mexico against an Albuquerque resident accused of directing a high-intensity laser at a law enforcement aircraft, an act that investigators state created a direct hazard to flight operations and pilot visibility during an active mission.
Jorge Pinon Armendariz, 47, is charged under federal law for aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft following an incident that occurred on October 7, 2025, involving the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Metro 1 helicopter. According to court filings, the aircraft was engaged in support of ground operations when it was repeatedly struck by a green laser beam originating from the ground.
Flight crew reports and onboard recording systems indicate that the laser made contact with the aircraft cockpit more than a dozen times, including direct exposure to the pilot’s field of vision. Aviation safety guidance identifies cockpit laser strikes as a significant operational threat due to the potential for temporary flash blindness, visual disorientation, and distraction during critical phases of flight.
Using onboard imaging systems, the helicopter crew tracked the source of the laser beam to a moving vehicle positioned in a McDonald’s drive-through lane and subsequently to a nearby residential location. Ground units from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence identified through aerial tracking. Authorities state that Armendariz fled upon law enforcement arrival but was later identified by deputies as the individual responsible for directing the laser at the aircraft.
At the time of the incident, Armendariz was also subject to an active state warrant related to alleged violations of pretrial release conditions in a separate case involving receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance. The overlap of the active warrant and the aviation incident introduced additional enforcement considerations during the response.
Federal authorities have charged Armendariz under 18 U.S.C. § 39A, a statute that prohibits knowingly aiming the beam of a laser pointer at an aircraft or at the flight path of an aircraft. The law reflects increasing concern over laser-related aviation incidents, which have risen in frequency across multiple jurisdictions.
Data referenced from the Federal Aviation Administration indicates that New Mexico ranked among the highest regions in the United States for laser strike incidents on a per capita basis in both 2024 and 2025, placing second only to Washington, D.C. These incidents are tracked due to their potential to compromise aviation safety, particularly in law enforcement, medical, and emergency response flights operating at low altitudes.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Albuquerque Field Office with operational support from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jena Ritchey.
If convicted, Armendariz faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Federal officials emphasize that laser interference with aircraft is treated as a serious offense due to the potential for in-flight safety compromise and risk to crew and public.
The charge remains an allegation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

It’s strange that New Mexico has a large amount of these incidents. I am glad they caught this guy. I hope he gets a fair trial and a proper sentence if found guilty of any charges. This man is more than half way through his life. He should decide to quit with the foolishness and begin to live as if his eternity has value to him.
Thank you for these articles today, John. Quite a bit about fraud in the news today. I hope that changes. I hope you have a great night! 😊
You’re very welcome, Chris.
What stands out in cases like this is how quickly something small can escalate into a serious risk. A single action can disrupt an entire operation in the air, and the margin for error in that environment is extremely narrow.
Situations like this come down to judgment in the moment. One decision can either stabilize things or create consequences that extend far beyond it.
On the broader pattern, enforcement tends to follow visibility. When incidents are tracked and reported more consistently, it can appear to increase even when the behavior itself has not changed at the same pace.
Thank you again, Chris. I hope all is well, and I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this reply. I can see how a situation to spin out of control very easily as you are noting. I’m glad that these events are being tracked and reported.
I hope you have a great day as well, John! 😊
Interesting read.
Thank you very much. 😎
