DePodesta, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, confirmed that Joseph “Troubles” Matos is currently being sought under a federal arrest warrant issued in the Northern District of Illinois. The reward increase reflects both the severity of the charges and the continued inability to locate the suspect following earlier public appeals.

Matos is wanted in connection with the July 3, 2021 shooting death of Chrys Carvajal, a member of the National Guard. Investigators allege that Carvajal was targeted without provocation while walking to his vehicle after attending a gathering. Federal filings indicate that Matos, along with another gang-affiliated individual, carried out the shooting in what authorities describe as a random act of violence tied to territorial enforcement patterns.

The charges filed against Matos include murder in aid of racketeering and murder through the use of a firearm—federal offenses commonly associated with organized criminal enterprise activity. The arrest warrant was formally issued on May 14, 2024, following the development of evidence linking Matos to the homicide.

Law enforcement identifies Matos as a member of the Milwaukee Kings, a street gang operating on Chicago’s North Side. Authorities state that the organization has been involved in narcotics distribution and repeated acts of violence, including shootings and assaults, used to maintain control over geographic territory and reinforce internal hierarchy. The structure and activity of the group place the case within a broader federal focus on racketeering-based violent crime networks.

The reward increase from a previously announced $25,000 to $50,000 signals continued prioritization of the case within federal enforcement channels. Investigators are seeking actionable intelligence from the public, including information on Matos’s current whereabouts, known associates, or movement patterns across jurisdictions.
