Demarkco Canty, 23, of Parkville, Maryland, was sentenced to 115 months in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation that investigators determined was responsible for distributing approximately 200,000 potentially lethal doses into regional supply channels. Court findings identified Canty as a logistics operative within the network, responsible for transporting fentanyl and heroin from Baltimore-based sources into West Virginia, where the substances were redistributed through local dealer networks operating in Hampshire and Mineral Counties.
The distribution structure was linked to a broader trafficking organization led by Sean Jarred Davis of Baltimore, who previously received a 240-month federal sentence in December 2024. The organization was identified as a sustained supply source for high-volume narcotics flow into rural and semi-rural areas, with particular emphasis on a distinct purple-colored fentanyl product circulating throughout the region. Federal case data confirms that the wider conspiracy involved more than 20 defendants, with cumulative sentencing across the group totaling 41 years of imprisonment, reflecting the scale and continuity of the operation.
In a separate but related enforcement track, federal sentencing was also imposed on two individuals tied to methamphetamine distribution within Hampshire County. James Shanholtz, 38, of Springfield, West Virginia, received a 92-month prison sentence, while Gregory Brian Harrison, 54, of Romney, West Virginia, was sentenced to 24 months. Both were identified as participants in a localized distribution network supplying methamphetamine through coordinated activity involving additional associates.
The dual-case structure reflects overlapping enforcement priorities targeting both synthetic opioid distribution and stimulant trafficking, each presenting distinct public safety threats while often intersecting within shared criminal ecosystems. Fentanyl, due to its potency at microgram levels, remains a high-fatality substance capable of producing lethal outcomes in trace quantities, while methamphetamine continues to drive long-term addiction patterns and associated criminal activity.
The fentanyl quantities attributed to the Canty-linked operation place it within a high-impact classification tier, where distribution volume directly correlates with mass casualty risk. Federal assessments of “lethal dose” metrics are based on standardized toxicity thresholds, underscoring the scale of harm potential embedded within the distribution totals presented during prosecution.
The investigations were conducted through a coordinated multi-agency framework led by the Potomac Highlands Drug Task Force, operating under High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) designation. Federal and state collaboration included the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration, alongside the West Virginia State Police and multiple county-level sheriff’s offices, including Mineral, Hampshire, Hardy, and Grant Counties, as well as the Keyser Police Department. This layered enforcement structure enabled sustained surveillance, controlled transactions, and intelligence sharing necessary to dismantle both supply chains and localized distribution cells.

I wish drug dealers would leave West Virginia alone. On the other hand, they probably wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t a market for these things. West Virginia is consistently ranked as one of the poorest states in the United States. These people have enough problems. I appreciate the coordination of law enforcement agencies to bring these criminals to justice. I pray that these traffickers wake up and see that they are wasting the life that God has given them, particularly the 23-year-old.
