Federal authorities have announced that former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on two felony counts following a grand jury presentment in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
The announcement was delivered during a joint briefing led by FBI Director Kash Patel, alongside Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and U.S. Attorney W. Ellis Boyle.
According to federal officials, the indictment stems from an alleged threat made against the President of the United States. Authorities stated that the threat was publicly posted and later deleted, followed by an apology issued by Comey. That sequence of actions was included in the evidence presented to the grand jury.
Officials confirmed that the case was investigated over a period of approximately nine to eleven months. During that time, FBI agents and Department of Justice prosecutors conducted a structured investigation, applying standard federal procedures used in cases involving threats of harm against individuals, including public officials.
The matter was presented before a federal grand jury in the district where the alleged offense occurred. The grand jury returned a two-count indictment, formally advancing the case into the federal court system.
Federal authorities emphasized that the investigative process followed established legal standards, with evidence reviewed and submitted in accordance with applicable law. Officials also confirmed that Comey will be afforded full due process under the United States Constitution as the case proceeds.
The case will now move forward through federal court proceedings, where the charges will be addressed and evaluated before a jury.
