FBI Boston Recovers 17th Century Reliquary Urn Stolen from Italian Church; Artifact Repatriated to Italy

BOSTON – The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Division has recovered a historically significant 17th century reliquary urn stolen from an Italian church and coordinated its return to the Italian Republic, concluding an international investigation into the trafficking of cultural property.

The urn, carved and gilded in wood, is believed to be one of 17 ecclesiastical artifacts taken from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo di Cangiano between August 1, 2012, and August 31, 2022. The artifact holds both religious and historical significance and is formally registered within Italy’s protected cultural heritage inventory.

The recovery was carried out on February 11, 2026, after the FBI—acting at the request of the Italian Ministry of Culture—located the artifact in the possession of an antiques dealer in the northeastern United States. Investigators determined that the item had been acquired through a secondary transaction involving another dealer based in Italy, indicating cross-border movement within the antiquities market.

The individual in possession of the urn voluntarily relinquished ownership, allowing federal authorities to secure the artifact and initiate repatriation procedures. The urn has since been returned to Italy, where a formal ceremony was conducted to mark its restoration to its country of origin.

According to Italian cultural authorities, the urn is cataloged within the Historical Artistic Heritage Items of the Italian Episcopal Conference (C.E.I.) and is subject to legal protection under agreements between the Italian State and the Vatican City State. Its removal from the church constituted a significant cultural loss, both in terms of religious heritage and historical continuity.

The investigation was initiated in the fall of 2025 by the FBI Boston Division, following intelligence sharing between the FBI’s specialized Art Crime Team, the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Rome, and Italian law enforcement counterparts, including the Carabinieri units responsible for cultural heritage protection. This coordinated effort enabled identification, authentication, and recovery of the artifact across jurisdictions.

The FBI’s Art Crime Team, composed of agents trained in cultural property investigations, played a central role in tracing the artifact and facilitating its lawful return. Since its establishment, the unit has recovered more than 20,000 cultural items valued at over $1 billion, reflecting the scale and complexity of illicit antiquities trafficking worldwide.

Federal authorities emphasized that the global trade in stolen cultural property remains a persistent criminal enterprise, often intersecting with organized networks and illicit financial activity. Recovery operations such as this are intended to disrupt those channels and restore culturally significant items to their rightful custodians.

Officials noted that continued collaboration between U.S. and international partners remains critical in identifying stolen artifacts, verifying provenance, and enforcing cultural property protections across borders.
