ALBUQUERQUE – A Shiprock man has entered a guilty plea in connection with a violent assault that left a victim with life-threatening injuries and required intensive medical intervention.
According to court records, on November 18, 2025, Darrell Joe Ben, Jr., 35, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, assaulted the victim during an incident in Shiprock, New Mexico. The attack occurred while Ben was under the influence of alcohol and escalated to a level that caused severe bodily trauma. Responding officers detained Ben at the scene without further incident.
The victim sustained critical injuries and was initially transported to a local hospital for emergency stabilization. Due to the severity of the injuries, the victim was subsequently transferred to an intensive care unit in Albuquerque, where advanced medical care was required to address life-threatening conditions.
Ben pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury and assault resulting in substantial bodily injury to a dating partner, both of which carry significant federal penalties. At sentencing, he faces a maximum term of up to 15 years in federal prison, along with potential supervised release conditions following incarceration.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the plea.
The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, with coordinated support from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. This joint investigative effort reflects the structured cooperation required in cases involving violent offenses within tribal jurisdictions.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Teleky is prosecuting the case.
Sentencing will be scheduled by the court at a later date.
