A Romanian national identified as Thomasz Szabo, known online under aliases including “Plank,” “Jonah,” and “Cypher,” has been sentenced in Washington, D.C. to 48 months in federal prison following his role in orchestrating a coordinated swatting campaign that reached deep into the upper tiers of U.S. government, federal law enforcement, and public institutions. The sentencing, handed down in U.S. District Court, concludes a multi-year investigation into a transnational operation that leveraged digital anonymity to trigger armed law enforcement responses across the United States.
Szabo, 27, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and making threats involving explosives, charges tied to a sustained pattern of false emergency reports designed to provoke large-scale tactical responses at targeted locations. The court additionally imposed three years of supervised release. Federal prosecutors had pursued a longer 57-month sentence, signaling the severity assigned to the scale and intent of the operation.
The activity attributed to Szabo was not isolated or sporadic. Court filings establish that beginning in late 2020, he led an online network that systematically carried out swatting attacks and bomb threats against a broad cross-section of American leadership and institutions. The targets included Members of Congress, senior executive branch officials, federal law enforcement leadership, members of the judiciary, state-level officials, journalists, and multiple religious institutions. The operational model relied on false reporting of imminent violence—often involving fabricated active shooter scenarios or explosive threats—triggering immediate deployment of armed response units to the victim locations.
The scale of the campaign intensified sharply during a concentrated period between December 24, 2023, and early January 2024. During this window, the network executed a rapid series of coordinated threats impacting at least 25 congressional figures or their families, multiple cabinet-level officials, more than a dozen senior federal law enforcement leaders, judicial personnel, and dozens of state officials. Religious institutions and media figures were also included in the targeting scope. The volume and velocity of these incidents forced repeated emergency responses, diverting law enforcement resources and introducing real-world risk to both victims and responding officers.
Evidence presented in court included internal communications from participants within the network, with one subordinate boasting of conducting more than 25 swatting incidents in a single day and referencing the significant financial burden placed on U.S. emergency response systems. The explicit acknowledgment of disruption and cost highlights the intent to generate chaos beyond individual targets, extending into systemic strain on public safety infrastructure.
Szabo’s role extended beyond participation. Prosecutors established that he functioned as the central coordinator and ideological driver of the group, actively encouraging followers to replicate and escalate these actions. He also publicized successful incidents within the community, reinforcing engagement and amplifying the reach of the operation. Earlier threats tied to him included a December 2020 warning of a mass shooting targeting synagogues in New York City and a January 2021 threat involving explosives directed at the U.S. Capitol and the incoming President. These incidents formed part of a broader pattern of escalation that blended ideological provocation with operational disruption.
The international dimension of the case played a critical role in both its complexity and its resolution. Szabo was extradited from Romania in November 2024 following coordination between U.S. and Romanian authorities. The investigation involved multiple U.S. agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Capitol Police, with additional support from international liaison offices and the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs. The case relied on cross-border evidence collection, mutual legal assistance mechanisms, and coordinated enforcement actions spanning multiple jurisdictions.
Officials across agencies emphasized that swatting is not treated as a digital prank but as a high-risk criminal act with potential for lethal outcomes. The deliberate triggering of armed police responses introduces a volatile environment where misidentification or rapid escalation can result in injury or loss of life. The repeated targeting of government officials and institutions further elevates these actions into a national security concern, particularly when coordinated at scale and directed from outside U.S. borders.
The sentencing reflects a broader shift in how law enforcement and the judicial system classify and pursue swatting-related offenses. The integration of cyber-enabled coordination, psychological impact, and infrastructure strain positions these cases within a hybrid threat category that intersects criminal law, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism domains. The Szabo case demonstrates the capacity for decentralized online communities to execute synchronized disruption campaigns with measurable real-world consequences.
This outcome establishes a clear enforcement signal: geographic distance does not insulate actors from U.S. jurisdiction when operations directly impact domestic safety and governance. The combination of digital traceability, international cooperation, and sustained investigative pressure continues to narrow the operational space for individuals leveraging anonymity to conduct high-impact threat campaigns.

Swatting is serious business and I think this guy got off easy with this sentence. His behavior was systematic and I wonder why he wasn’t given the more serious sentence the government was going for. After his release from prison, someone will need to keep an eye on this guy. I know they will keep track of him for three years but this guy is still young. Most of the Romanian Americans I have met are very pleased with the freedoms they have in the U.S. This guy seems like an anomaly to me.
Thank you for this report and I hope you have a great day, John.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
You’re absolutely right to point out the gap between what was requested and what was ultimately handed down. Sentencing can vary based on multiple factors—guideline calculations, cooperation, prior history, and how the court weighs the total conduct presented. From the outside, it can look lighter than expected, especially given how structured and widespread the activity was.
You’re also right that swatting isn’t minor. At that scale, it puts real lives at risk and drains critical response resources.
The supervised release will keep him under monitoring for a period, but as you said, the longer-term concern is whether behavior changes once that oversight ends. That’s something the system tries to manage, but it’s not perfect and hopefully works out for the betterment.
And your point about Romanian Americans is fair. In most cases, people who come here value the opportunities and freedoms they have. This situation stands apart from that.
Thank you again for taking the time to read and share your thoughts, Chris—it’s always welcomed and appreciated. I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your response. I did a bit of research before I commented and found that you are spot on about swatting: “it puts real lives at risk and drains critical response resources.” I’m hoping that if he ever returns to these kinds of behaviors that he is hit doubly hard with his conviction.
I always appreciate your responses to my comments. I hope you have a great night and day ahead as well! 😊
Interesting read.
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to read it. 😎
