AUSTIN, TEXAS — The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a detailed investigative update regarding the March 1, 2026 mass shooting outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden in downtown Austin, Texas, an attack that left three people dead and fifteen others wounded before the suspected gunman was killed during an exchange of gunfire with responding Austin Police Department officers.
According to the FBI San Antonio Division, the suspect, NDIAGA DIAGNE, 53, a Senegal-born naturalized U.S. citizen living in Austin, acted alone during the attack and was not previously the subject of an FBI investigation prior to the shooting.
Federal investigators stated there is currently no evidence that Diagne was acting under the direction of a Foreign Terrorist Organization, nor have investigators identified evidence that he received operational support, funding, or direct coordination from outside actors.
The shooting unfolded during the early morning hours of March 1 in Austin’s heavily populated entertainment district near West 6th Street, an area known for large nightlife crowds, bars, music venues, and late-night pedestrian traffic.
According to federal investigators, Diagne first opened fire at approximately 1:57 a.m. while parked on Rio Grande Street, firing into Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden from inside his vehicle.
Investigators stated that approximately one minute later, Diagne relocated his vehicle to a nearby parking area near Wood Street and West 6th Street before exiting the vehicle armed with a rifle.
Authorities allege Diagne then continued firing in the parking lot area before moving toward the intersection of West Avenue and West 6th Street, where additional shots were fired into the crowded nightlife corridor.
At approximately 2:02 a.m., Austin Police Department officers arrived near the scene and engaged Diagne during what investigators described as a rapid response effort to stop the attack before additional casualties occurred.
Federal authorities stated the responding officers successfully neutralized the threat during the confrontation.
Investigators confirmed that Diagne died from wounds sustained during the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.
According to the FBI, Diagne became a naturalized United States citizen in April 2013. Federal investigators stated he legally purchased a handgun in August 2017 and later acquired a rifle in October 2017. Authorities confirmed both firearms were used during the March 1 attack.
The FBI stated the investigation rapidly evolved into a major multi-agency federal response involving approximately 400 personnel drawn from fourteen FBI field offices, multiple FBI Headquarters divisions, and numerous federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
Federal investigators deployed a large array of specialized forensic, behavioral, digital intelligence, and technical response units as part of the post-attack investigation.
The FBI Computer Analysis Response Team conducted forensic examinations of digital devices recovered during the investigation, while the FBI Digital Images and Video Recovery Team collected and analyzed more than 3,000 separate video files totaling over 200 hours of footage sourced from surveillance systems, CCTV cameras, and other digital recording devices.
Federal authorities stated investigators have already processed more than 150 million digital files during the inquiry, with additional review still ongoing.
Investigators additionally seized approximately thirty electronic devices including laptops, cellular phones, and tablets believed to be connected to the suspect or relevant to the investigation.
The FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team assisted investigators through analysis of cellular network data and communications patterns connected to the suspect’s movements and activities prior to the shooting.
Authorities also confirmed that FBI language specialists translated Wolof-language materials into English during the investigation, while the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit assisted with witness interview strategies and psychological behavioral review.
Federal investigators conducted eighty-eight interviews, obtained more than one hundred subpoenas, secured twenty-two search warrants, and completed twelve consent-based searches during the investigation process.
According to the FBI, the investigation indicates the attack stemmed from escalating violent behavior connected in part to personal grievances and anger tied to U.S. and Israeli military actions involving Iran.
Federal investigators stated that Diagne appeared to admire recently deceased Iranian leader AYATOLLAH ALI KHAMENEI and that at the time of the attack he was wearing clothing displaying Iranian imagery, including a shirt featuring the Iranian flag and a sweatshirt bearing the phrase “Property of Allah.”
Despite those findings, federal investigators stated they have not uncovered evidence establishing formal ideological direction, organized radicalization, or operational ties to a foreign extremist organization.
Authorities also stated investigators have not conclusively determined why Diagne selected the downtown Austin entertainment district as the target location for the attack.
The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue reviewing digital evidence, communications data, behavioral indicators, and witness testimony in an effort to better understand the factors leading up to the shooting.
Federal investigators stated that identifying warning indicators and behavioral escalation patterns remains a central focus of the continuing inquiry as agencies attempt to strengthen future violence prevention efforts tied to lone-actor attacks.
The FBI publicly commended the Austin Police Department for what federal authorities described as a rapid and courageous response that likely prevented additional deaths and injuries during the incident.
Federal authorities also acknowledged assistance provided by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas during the investigation, particularly regarding legal process coordination and evidentiary procedures.
The March 1 shooting joins a growing number of high-casualty public attacks in which investigators have examined the role of personal grievance escalation, ideological fixation, online content exposure, behavioral deterioration, and lone-actor mobilization patterns without clear operational links to organized extremist networks.

It sounds like the FBI has done a great job collecting information about this event. It also sounds like the Austin Police Department did the best they could given the situation. It is good that there is no evidence that this guy is tied to any foreign terrorists but his behavior was was beyond disturbing.
I know my memory is fading a bit but this only happened a couple of months ago and I don’t even remember it. There are so many shootings these days that they all run into one another.
This is one of those things that seems impossible to stop but I know law enforcement is trying to keep up with it all. May God be with the families of those who lost their lives and I hope those who were wounded are able to eventually get back to a regular life.
Thank you very much, Chris. You are absolutely right. Incidents like this can begin blending together because there have been so many over the past several years, especially when they dominate headlines briefly and then quickly disappear from public focus afterward.
From everything released so far, it does appear that both the FBI and Austin Police Department moved very quickly once the attack began, and the rapid response likely prevented additional casualties.
You also made an important point about how difficult these types of incidents can be to stop completely, especially when they involve lone actors who may not have direct operational ties to larger organizations. Those situations are often some of the hardest for law enforcement and intelligence agencies to identify ahead of time.
And I absolutely agree with your final point. The families who lost loved ones, along with those who survived the attack, will carry the effects of it long after the headlines fade.
Thank you again, Chris. I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this thorough reply (as always). It is amazing how quickly the news cycle moves on and important events like this get lost in most places except for the minds of those involved in the incident.
I can see how an event like this would be one of the hardest types to predict. All of us have events in our lives that we’ll remember forever. Unfortunately, as you stated, the effects of this will be long remembered by those who were impacted.
Thank you for your kind words and I hope you have a great day ahead as well!😊
