Hungarian National Arrested Following FBI Investigation into 2024 Swatting Incident Targeting Rhode Island Residence

TIVERTON, RHODE ISLAND — An international investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Division has resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old man from Nógrád County, Hungary, in connection with a 2024 swatting incident that triggered an armed law enforcement response in Tiverton, Rhode Island.

Federal authorities announced that the arrest was carried out by Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation following a cross-border investigation involving the FBI Boston Division, the Tiverton Police Department, and the FBI’s Legal Attaché Office in Budapest.

According to investigators, the case stems from an April 24, 2024 emergency call placed to the Tiverton Police Department in which the caller falsely claimed that a man had murdered members of his family and intended to kill both his dog and himself.

The call prompted an immediate armed police response to the address provided by the caller due to the reported threat involving multiple alleged homicides and an active suicide scenario.

When Tiverton Police officers arrived at the location, authorities determined the emergency report was fabricated and classified the incident as a swatting attack.

Swatting refers to the deliberate act of providing false information to emergency services in order to trigger a heavily armed police response against an unsuspecting target. These incidents frequently involve fabricated claims of shootings, hostage situations, bomb threats, murders, or active violence scenarios designed to provoke deployment of tactical law enforcement units.

Federal authorities stated investigators coordinated with the FBI’s Legal Attaché Office in Budapest to work alongside Hungarian authorities and the National Bureau of Investigation’s Transatlantic Department.

According to federal investigators, Hungarian authorities reviewed digital forensic evidence allegedly connecting the suspect to the swatting operation before carrying out the arrest in Nógrád County.

Hungarian authorities reportedly stated that the suspect admitted involvement in the offense during questioning.

The individual has since been released from custody while judicial proceedings continue within Hungary’s legal system.

Federal authorities did not release the suspect’s identity and stated that additional details remain restricted due to the continuing investigation.

The case reflects the increasingly international nature of swatting investigations, where perpetrators frequently operate across national borders while exploiting anonymization tools, internet-based communication platforms, voice masking technology, and digital infrastructure designed to obscure attribution.

Several swatting incidents across the United States in recent years have resulted in serious injuries and fatalities after officers responded believing they were confronting active violent threats.

The FBI Boston Division stated the investigation remains ongoing and that no further information will be released at this time.
