Morgan County Man Sentenced to 160 Years in Federal Prison for Child Sexual Exploitation Crimes

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A Morgan County man has been sentenced to what amounts to a life term in federal prison after pleading guilty to multiple child sexual exploitation offenses involving the production, transportation, and possession of child sexual abuse material, federal authorities announced Monday.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama, U.S. District Judge Liles C. Burke sentenced Caleb Sean Wheeler, 28, of Hartselle, Alabama, to 1,920 months in federal prison — equivalent to 160 years — followed by a lifetime term of supervised release.

Federal court records show Wheeler pleaded guilty in January 2026 to four counts of sexual exploitation of children along with one count each of transportation of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Investigators determined that in June 2025, Wheeler produced three videos and one image involving child sexual abuse material before transporting illicit material across digital systems. Prosecutors stated the offenses involved direct exploitation activity rather than simple possession alone, significantly increasing the severity of the case under federal sentencing guidelines tied to child exploitation crimes.

Acting U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Crosby stated that the sentence reflects the federal government’s continued commitment to protecting children from online exploitation and predatory abuse.

“The United States Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting the innocent children of this district from crimes like those committed by Caleb Wheeler,” Crosby stated. “With the help of our law enforcement partners, Wheeler will spend the rest of his life in federal prison unable to hurt another child.”

Federal investigators emphasized that crimes involving the production of child sexual abuse material are treated among the most serious offenses prosecuted under federal law due to the direct victimization involved and the long-term psychological and emotional harm inflicted upon minors.

David R. Fitzgibbons, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Birmingham, stated that federal law enforcement agencies continue prioritizing child exploitation investigations due to the growing scale and sophistication of online abuse networks operating through digital communication platforms, encrypted applications, cloud storage systems, peer-to-peer sharing networks, and anonymous online environments.

“The exploitation of children is a heinous crime that demands immediate and vigorous action from law enforcement,” Fitzgibbons stated. “At the FBI, we are committed to doing everything in our power, with a sense of urgency and in collaboration with our partners, to protect innocent children and bring predators to justice.”

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Birmingham Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force alongside multiple federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. Agencies assisting in the investigation included:

Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Leann White prosecuted the case on behalf of the federal government.

The prosecution was conducted under the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, a nationwide program launched in 2006 to combat online child exploitation, digital predation, child trafficking operations, and internet-facilitated abuse crimes involving minors.

Project Safe Childhood combines federal investigative resources with state and local law enforcement coordination to identify offenders, disrupt exploitation networks, locate victims, and prosecute individuals involved in online child exploitation activity. The initiative increasingly focuses on digital forensic analysis, encrypted communications investigations, cloud-based evidence recovery, cyber tipline intelligence, and cross-jurisdictional investigative coordination.

Federal authorities continue warning that internet-facilitated child exploitation cases remain a rapidly expanding investigative priority due to increased offender access to anonymous communication technologies, hidden online communities, encrypted file-sharing systems, and international digital distribution networks.

Law enforcement agencies urged the public to report suspected child exploitation activity immediately. Tips may be submitted directly to the FBI Birmingham Field Office or through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline system, which remains one of the primary national intake points for online child exploitation reporting and investigative referrals.

Federal officials did not indicate the ages or identities of the victims involved in the case in order to protect victim privacy and ongoing safeguarding protocols tied to child exploitation investigations.
