ALBUQUERQUE — A Shiprock, New Mexico man has been sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison after admitting to a deadly home invasion attack inside Navajo Nation territory that resulted in the fatal stabbing of a resident attempting to protect another occupant, federal authorities announced Tuesday.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, Armondo Paul, 25, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced to 210 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to Second-Degree Murder in Indian Country.
Federal court records state that during the early morning hours of June 27, 2025, Paul traveled to a residence in Shiprock, New Mexico, where prosecutors say he intentionally disabled electrical power to the home before forcibly entering the residence by kicking open the back door.
Investigators stated that Paul assaulted one of the occupants inside the residence before a second resident, identified in court documents as John Doe, intervened in an attempt to stop the attack and protect the other victim.
According to federal prosecutors, Paul stabbed Doe in the neck using a kitchen knife he had brought with him from his own residence prior to the attack. After being stabbed, Doe fled the residence and collapsed in the driveway outside the home, where he later died from his injuries.
Federal authorities did not publicly disclose additional details regarding the relationship between the individuals involved or whether prior incidents had occurred before the fatal confrontation.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Paul serve five years of supervised release following incarceration. Federal officials stated that the supervised release conditions will include mandatory mental health treatment requirements.
The court additionally ordered Paul to pay restitution totaling $5,471.37 to the Crime Victims Reparation Commission for funeral-related expenses connected to the victim’s death. Additional restitution to the victim’s family will be determined at a later date and is expected to include travel expenses related to court proceedings along with counseling and victim recovery costs associated with the homicide.
The announcement was made jointly by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and FBI Albuquerque Field Office Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris.
The investigation was conducted by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary C. Jones prosecuted the case on behalf of the federal government.
The case falls under federal jurisdiction due to the alleged offense occurring within Indian Country, where certain major crimes involving enrolled tribal members are prosecuted federally under statutes governing crimes committed on tribal lands.
Federal authorities continue emphasizing cooperation between tribal law enforcement agencies, federal investigators, and regional prosecutorial offices in addressing violent crime occurring within Native American communities and reservation territories.
Violent crime investigations involving tribal lands often require coordinated jurisdictional response involving tribal police departments, the FBI, federal prosecutors, and in some cases state-level investigative agencies depending on the circumstances surrounding the offense, location, and legal status of the individuals involved.
The sentencing arrives amid continued federal focus on violent crime response, victim support services, and interagency coordination within tribal jurisdictions across the Southwest and broader United States tribal territories.
