FBI Chicago Expands Operation Iron Pursuit Efforts as Nationwide Child Exploitation Crackdown Identifies Hundreds of Victims and Suspects

CHICAGO — Federal authorities have announced the results of Operation Iron Pursuit, a nationwide enforcement initiative targeting child exploitation offenses, online predators, trafficking operations, and individuals accused of abusing or exploiting children through digital and physical criminal networks.

The operation, conducted throughout April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, resulted in the identification and recovery of more than 200 child victims nationwide while more than 350 alleged child sexual abuse offenders now face criminal accountability tied to a wide range of exploitation-related investigations.

The FBI Chicago Field Office additionally announced the release of a new public service announcement campaign focused on child abuse prevention, online safety awareness, public vigilance, and reporting suspicious activity involving crimes against children.

Federal authorities stated Operation Iron Pursuit focused on investigations involving online enticement, sexual exploitation, sex trafficking, kidnapping, production and distribution of child sexual abuse material, coercion offenses, and exploitation networks operating across internet-connected platforms and communication systems.

Special Agent in Charge DOUGLAS S. DEPODESTA stated combating child exploitation remains one of the FBI’s highest investigative priorities and emphasized that operations involving crimes against children continue year-round beyond Child Abuse Prevention Month initiatives.

United States Attorney ANDREW S. BOUTROS for the Northern District of Illinois stated federal prosecutors remain committed to aggressively pursuing individuals accused of exploiting children and utilizing federal prosecution tools to seek long-term prison sentences in cases involving abuse and exploitation.

Federal authorities stated investigative activity conducted during Operation Iron Pursuit included arrests, indictments, execution of search warrants, forensic examinations of electronic evidence, undercover operations, sentencings, and coordinated victim recovery efforts.

Cases highlighted during the operation included:

• A Chicago man sentenced to 24 years in federal prison for sexually abusing and recording assaults involving two children.
• A Columbus, Ohio man who pleaded guilty to creating AI-generated obscene material involving adults and children while also engaging in cyberstalking activity.
• A District of Columbia man charged federally with production of child pornography.

Federal investigators continue to warn that evolving technology platforms, encrypted communications, anonymous online services, artificial intelligence systems, and social networking applications are increasingly being exploited by offenders involved in crimes against children. Authorities have also identified growing concerns involving the use of generative artificial intelligence tools to create synthetic exploitative imagery and digitally manipulated abuse material.

The operation was conducted in coordination with the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against Children program, commonly referred to as VCAC, along with Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Forces operating across the United States.

According to federal authorities, the mission of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against Children program is to provide rapid, proactive, and comprehensive investigative capabilities to counter child abuse and exploitation offenses that fall within federal jurisdiction. The program also focuses on identifying, locating, and recovering child victims while strengthening coordination between federal, state, local, tribal, and international law enforcement agencies investigating crimes against children.

The FBI stated the program investigates a broad range of offenses involving child exploitation, including child abductions, online enticement, trafficking of child sexual abuse material, sextortion, contact offenses involving minors, international child exploitation travel offenses, and international parental kidnapping investigations.

Federal authorities emphasized that child abduction investigations involving young children can begin immediately under federal law. Investigators noted there is no requirement for a child to be missing for 24 hours before the FBI becomes involved in qualifying abduction cases.

The FBI additionally highlighted the role of its Child Abduction Rapid Deployment teams, known as CARD teams, which were established to rapidly assist state and local authorities during critical child abduction investigations. These teams provide investigative coordination, behavioral analysis support, mapping systems identifying nearby registered sex offenders, national lead coverage, and field operational assistance during high-risk child recovery operations.

Federal authorities also outlined the continuing role of Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Forces, which combine federal, state, and local investigative resources to conduct undercover online investigations involving predators accused of targeting children through social media, gaming systems, messaging applications, livestream services, and internet forums.

Investigators noted that many exploitation investigations originate through public reporting systems, cyber tips, undercover operations, digital forensic analysis, or referrals involving suspicious online behavior.

The FBI additionally emphasized its partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which operates a 24-hour reporting hotline and the CyberTipline system used to receive and distribute reports involving suspected child exploitation activity. Federal authorities stated FBI personnel assigned to the center review reports involving possession, production, and distribution of child sexual abuse material, online enticement activity, exploitation networks, and international child exploitation offenses.

Federal officials also highlighted the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against Children International Task Force, a multinational investigative partnership involving law enforcement personnel from dozens of countries coordinating transnational child exploitation investigations and intelligence-sharing operations.

Authorities stated the FBI continues to encourage parents and guardians to remain vigilant regarding online activity involving children and to monitor interactions occurring across social media platforms, gaming environments, encrypted messaging applications, livestream communities, and file-sharing systems frequently exploited by online predators.

The FBI additionally reminded the public that the FBI Child ID App remains available for mobile devices, allowing parents to securely store identifying information and photographs that can be rapidly shared with authorities during emergencies involving missing or abducted children.

Federal authorities stated public awareness, rapid reporting, digital vigilance, and coordinated investigative response remain critical components in identifying victims, dismantling exploitation networks, and protecting children from online and physical abuse threats.
