KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Federal prosecutors in the Western District of Missouri have filed criminal charges against a Missouri man accused of manufacturing explosive materials without a license, unlawfully possessing an unregistered destructive device, and distributing detailed instructional content related to the construction of explosives and improvised explosive devices through publicly accessible online platforms.
United States Attorney R. Matthew Price announced Tuesday that a federal criminal complaint has been filed against JORDAN DERRICK, 40, of Sweet Springs, Missouri. The complaint alleges Derrick operated multiple social media and video-sharing accounts where he uploaded and distributed instructional videos demonstrating the production of numerous explosive compounds and explosive-related components over an extended period of time.
According to federal investigators, Derrick allegedly began distributing the videos no later than September 18, 2023. Prosecutors state the material included step-by-step demonstrations covering the synthesis and handling of a wide range of highly volatile and dangerous explosive substances commonly associated with military explosives, improvised explosive devices, detonators, and energetic compounds.
Court documents allege the instructional content included demonstrations involving detonators and explosive compounds identified as nickel aminoguanidine perchlorate (NAP), ethylene glycol dinitrate (EGDN), hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD), hexamine dinitrate (HDN), Research Department eXplosive (RDX), silver acetylide double salt (SADS), trinitroxylene (TNX or R-salt), trinitrotoluene (TNT), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), aminoguanidine bicarbonate, and ammonium nitrate/nitromethane (ANNM).
Many of the compounds referenced in the complaint are known within explosives investigations for their extreme instability, destructive capability, and historical association with military-grade explosives, homemade energetic materials, terrorist plots, and clandestine bomb-making activity. Several substances named in the charging documents are highly sensitive to friction, heat, static discharge, or impact, creating substantial hazards not only to intended targets but also to individuals attempting to manufacture them.
Federal investigators allege Derrick’s instructional material was later downloaded and utilized by SHAMSUD-DIN JABBAR, the individual accused of carrying out the January 1, 2025 attack in New Orleans. According to the complaint, Jabbar allegedly created improvised explosive devices consistent with methods demonstrated in Derrick’s videos. Authorities stated the devices planted during the attack ultimately failed to detonate and were rendered safe by responding law enforcement and bomb disposal personnel.
The complaint additionally connects Derrick’s alleged online instructional activity to a separate explosion investigation in Odessa, Missouri. Federal authorities state that on May 4, 2026, an explosion occurred at a private residence in Odessa. During a subsequent search of the property, investigators reportedly discovered components believed to be associated with explosive device manufacturing activity.
According to court filings, the occupant of the residence allegedly informed investigators that he began manufacturing explosive devices after viewing online tutorial content from a social media account believed to be operated by Derrick. Authorities indicated the Odessa incident remains under active investigation.
The case highlights growing federal concern surrounding the online dissemination of dangerous technical materials involving explosives, improvised weapons construction, and destructive device manufacturing. Investigators increasingly monitor public and encrypted digital platforms where instructional content related to explosives, firearms modification, chemical synthesis, and tactical attack methodologies is distributed to broad audiences with little restriction.
Federal authorities have repeatedly warned that modern digital platforms allow highly specialized and dangerous technical knowledge to spread rapidly across jurisdictions, often reaching individuals with no formal chemistry, military, or engineering background. Investigators have also noted that even incomplete or amateur attempts to recreate explosive compounds can result in catastrophic injury, structural destruction, fires, and secondary hazards to surrounding communities and first responders.
If convicted of engaging in the business of manufacturing explosive materials without a license, Derrick faces up to 10 years in federal prison. The charge involving unlawful possession of an unregistered destructive device carries an additional potential sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment. The charge involving distribution of information relating to the manufacture of explosives carries a maximum statutory sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.
Federal officials emphasized that sentences in the federal system are determined by the court using advisory sentencing guidelines and statutory sentencing factors established by Congress. Federal cases do not provide for parole.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney TREY ALFORD and Special Assistant United States Attorney BRANDON CHLARSON, with assistance from Trial Attorney MICHAEL DITTOE of the National Security Division.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The criminal complaint contains allegations that have not yet been proven in court. JORDAN DERRICK is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
