FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A 48-year-old Australian permanent resident has been sentenced to more than 28 years in federal prison after investigators uncovered child exploitation activity tied to an undercover online operation in Arkansas that ultimately revealed what prosecutors described as a large and longstanding collection of child sexual abuse material.
Gabriel Perkhofer was sentenced on May 12, 2026, to 345 months in federal prison without the possibility of parole, followed by lifetime supervised release, after pleading guilty to distributing child pornography and possessing a mobile device containing child pornography.
Chief United States District Judge Timothy L. Brooks handed down the sentence during proceedings held in federal court in Fayetteville.
According to federal court documents, the investigation began after Perkhofer engaged in communications with an undercover law enforcement officer posing as the mother of two underage daughters.
During those communications, prosecutors stated Perkhofer described explicit sexual acts he allegedly intended to carry out involving the fictional children and discussed producing sexually explicit material involving minors.
Federal authorities stated Perkhofer additionally transmitted two child pornography files directly to the undercover officer during the communications.
Investigators allege Perkhofer later traveled from Missouri into Arkansas intending to meet the supposed mother and children before being taken into custody by law enforcement authorities.
Following the arrest, investigators conducted a forensic examination of Perkhofer’s phone and allegedly uncovered what prosecutors described as a substantial archive of child pornography accumulated over multiple years, along with extensive communications involving other individuals tied to child exploitation activity.
Federal authorities stated the digital evidence revealed not only possession and distribution activity, but also ongoing interaction within broader online offender networks centered around child sexual abuse material trading and exploitation discussions.
The case highlights continuing federal concerns surrounding encrypted messaging platforms, cross-border online predator networks, and the growing use of internet-based communications to facilitate attempted exploitation offenses involving minors.
Law enforcement agencies increasingly warn that offenders often attempt to exploit perceived anonymity online through social media platforms, encrypted applications, hidden forums, and direct messaging systems to locate vulnerable children or individuals they believe can provide access to minors.
Federal investigators also continue emphasizing that undercover operations remain one of the most effective tools for intercepting offenders before physical abuse occurs, particularly in cases involving attempted child enticement, exploitation planning, or interstate travel involving minors.
Perkhofer was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Western District of Arkansas in July 2024 and later entered a guilty plea in December 2025.
U.S. Attorney Kimberly D. Harris for the Western District of Arkansas announced the sentencing.
The FBI and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tyler Williams, Devon Still, and Dustin Roberts prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
Federal authorities stated the prosecution was conducted under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched to combat internet-based child exploitation, identify offenders targeting minors online, and support the recovery and protection of exploited children.
Project Safe Childhood coordinates federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to investigate child exploitation networks operating across digital platforms, interstate jurisdictions, and international communication channels.
