A Fruitland man has pleaded guilty to second degree murder after driving drunk at approximately 107 mph and crashing head-on into an oncoming vehicle, killing the other driver in a violent collision that federal authorities described as entirely preventable.
According to court records, Timothy Begay, 39, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, admitted responsibility for the fatal crash, which occurred on December 9, 2024, in New Mexico.
Federal prosecutors stated Begay was intoxicated when he crossed the center line and struck a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Investigators determined Begay was traveling approximately 107 mph at the time of the collision.
Medical testing conducted following the crash showed Begay had a blood alcohol concentration of .239, nearly three times the legal driving limit in most jurisdictions across the United States.
The impact killed the driver of the oncoming vehicle. Authorities have not publicly released additional identifying details regarding the victim.
Begay pleaded guilty to second degree murder and now faces up to 15 years in federal prison at sentencing.
The case underscores continuing concerns surrounding high-speed impaired driving incidents occurring across both rural and tribal jurisdictions, where excessive speed, alcohol impairment, limited roadway visibility, and long-distance travel corridors can dramatically increase the severity of collisions and fatality rates.
Federal investigators and tribal law enforcement agencies continue warning that intoxicated driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable roadway deaths throughout the United States, particularly in areas involving highways, reservation roads, and rural transportation corridors where emergency response distances may be greater and crash survivability decreases significantly at extreme speeds.
Cases involving second degree murder charges tied to drunk driving incidents generally involve aggravating circumstances demonstrating extreme recklessness, conscious disregard for human life, excessive intoxication levels, repeated dangerous conduct, or exceptionally dangerous driving behavior.
The Farmington Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated the case with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Marshall is prosecuting the case.

This is so sad on so many levels.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
It really is tragic on multiple levels. One reckless decision involving alcohol and extreme speed completely changed multiple lives forever in a matter of seconds. Cases like this affect not only the victim and their loved ones, but also families, communities, first responders, and even the future of the person responsible for the crash itself. You would think that after all these years of fighting against drunk driving, people would wise up.
Thank you again for reading and for taking the time to comment, Chris. I greatly appreciate it, and I hope you have a great night and day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for sharing this article. We can’t get enough reminders about tragic events like this and the dangers of driving while under the influence of any substance that might mess with our reflexes.
I was thinking of the families of those involved as well but your mention of the first responders is something I hadn’t thought of. It has always got to be difficult to respond to a crash like this one.
Thank you again, John, and I hope you have a great night and day ahead as well!😊
