Three Inmates Federally Charged After Violent 22-Second Assault Leaves Correction Officer Unconscious at Doña Ana County Detention Center

Federal authorities have charged three inmates following a violent assault inside the Doña Ana County Detention Center that left a correction officer unconscious after being beaten, stomped, and tased during what investigators described as a brutal 22-second attack.

According to federal court documents, the assault occurred on May 11, 2026, inside the detention facility while a correction officer assisting the U.S. Marshals Service was conducting inmate monitoring operations involving a federal detainee housed within the facility.

Federal investigators stated the officer, identified in court records as John Doe, walked to the upper level of the housing area to monitor six inmates who were supposed to be secured inside their cells. Authorities stated that upon reaching the second-floor area, the officer encountered inmates Juan Gabriel Torres, Sergio Seanez, and Titus Josiah McGaw Bulger in a location where they were not authorized to be present.

Court documents state Torres initially lunged toward the officer and attempted to strike him. Investigators stated the officer avoided the first punch before Seanez and Bulger joined the assault, forcing the officer to the ground.

Federal authorities stated Seanez restrained the officer while Torres and Bulger repeatedly punched, kicked, and stomped the officer’s body, head, and neck until he lost consciousness.

Investigators stated the assault continued even after the officer became unresponsive. Court documents further state Torres removed the officer’s taser from its holster and deployed it against the unconscious officer during the attack.

According to investigators, the assault lasted approximately 22 seconds. During that period, the three inmates allegedly struck the officer dozens of times before additional correction personnel entered the housing pod in response to the attack.

The officer was transported for emergency medical treatment and later regained consciousness after surviving the assault.

Federal prosecutors charged Torres, Seanez, and Bulger with assault involving a dangerous weapon and infliction of bodily injury on a person assisting officers of the United States.

If convicted, all three defendants face up to 20 years in federal prison.

The case highlights continuing security concerns surrounding detention facility violence, inmate movement control failures, staff vulnerability inside correctional housing units, and the increasing dangers correction officers face while supervising high-risk inmate populations.

Correctional facilities across the United States continue confronting escalating operational pressures involving overcrowding, inmate violence, gang activity, staffing shortages, contraband weapon access, and assaults targeting correctional personnel operating inside confined housing environments.

Federal investigators increasingly examine surveillance footage, inmate movement logs, housing control procedures, officer response timelines, contraband access points, and use-of-force protocols following major detention facility assaults involving serious bodily injury or attempted homicide-level violence against correctional staff.

The Las Cruces Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated the case with assistance from the Doña Ana County Detention Center, the U.S. Marshals Service, and Las Cruces Police Department Task Force Officers.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Grant Gardner and Mark Saltman are prosecuting the case.

Federal authorities emphasized that the criminal complaint contains allegations only and that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
