CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Federal authorities have announced the results of a sweeping three-month multi-jurisdictional enforcement operation spanning North Carolina and South Carolina that targeted violent offenders, drug traffickers, armed felons, fugitives, and organized criminal networks operating across state and district lines.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina, Operation Spring Cleaning resulted in 56 federal defendants charged, more than 254 kilograms of illegal narcotics seized, over 22 kilograms of fentanyl recovered, 110 illegal firearms confiscated, and 157 fugitives apprehended on state and federal charges throughout the region.
Federal officials stated the operation focused heavily on dismantling fentanyl trafficking pipelines, reducing gun violence, disrupting repeat violent offenders, and intercepting criminal organizations operating across the Carolinas.
Authorities described the enforcement surge as a proactive effort designed to reduce anticipated increases in violent crime and narcotics activity during the summer months, when many jurisdictions historically experience spikes in shootings, gang activity, overdose incidents, armed robberies, and trafficking operations.
The operation brought together federal agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force. State and local law enforcement agencies across both North Carolina and South Carolina also participated extensively in the coordinated enforcement effort.
Federal authorities stated investigators targeted individuals tied to fentanyl distribution, methamphetamine trafficking, illegal firearms possession, armed criminal activity, violent offenses, and fugitive operations crossing county, district, and state jurisdictions.
The seizure totals underscore the continuing scale of the fentanyl crisis impacting the United States. Officials confirmed more than 22 kilograms of fentanyl were removed during the operation — an amount capable of producing millions of potentially lethal doses depending on purity and distribution methods.
Federal investigators also recovered substantial quantities of methamphetamine and additional narcotics while confiscating 110 illegal firearms connected to trafficking operations, violent offenders, and criminal investigations tied to the enforcement surge.
Authorities additionally seized significant amounts of United States currency believed connected to narcotics trafficking and criminal distribution networks.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson stated the operation was designed to aggressively disrupt violent criminal activity before summer escalation cycles intensified recruitment, trafficking, and street-level crime activity across the region.
Federal officials repeatedly emphasized that organized criminal activity increasingly crosses city, county, district, and state boundaries, requiring real-time intelligence sharing and multi-agency coordination to effectively target trafficking networks and violent offenders.
DEA Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Jae W. Chung stated the operation demonstrated the importance of coordinated intelligence-driven enforcement efforts involving federal, state, and local agencies working simultaneously across multiple jurisdictions.
ATF leadership stated the operation reflected the growing need for integrated firearm trafficking investigations and violent crime suppression strategies tied to narcotics operations and armed repeat offenders.
FBI Charlotte Special Agent in Charge Reid Davis stated federal prosecutions involving violent repeat offenders carry substantial long-term consequences due to the structure of the federal justice system, where parole opportunities are significantly more limited than many state systems.
Homeland Security Investigations officials stated the operation utilized broad federal investigative authorities, intelligence coordination, and interagency enforcement tools to identify criminal organizations operating throughout the Carolinas.
The United States Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force stated the coordinated operation enabled authorities to safely locate and apprehend numerous fugitives considered dangerous or high-priority targets.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Estella D. Patterson stated many federal investigations connected to the operation originated from local officer encounters and street-level enforcement activity identifying criminal patterns within impacted neighborhoods.
Federal officials stated Operation Spring Cleaning forms part of the United States Attorney’s Office broader violent crime reduction strategy focused on dismantling trafficking organizations, reducing illegal firearm circulation, prosecuting violent repeat offenders, and strengthening cross-agency intelligence operations throughout the region.
Authorities also stated the operation aligns with the Department of Justice’s broader nationwide enforcement initiative known as Operation Take Back America, which focuses on cartel disruption, transnational criminal organizations, violent offenders, narcotics trafficking, and coordinated federal enforcement operations.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina is overseeing the federal prosecutions connected to the operation.
