HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As digital evidence becomes increasingly important in criminal investigations, the FBI is expanding how it trains agents, analysts, and forensic specialists through a highly realistic technical training environment known as the Kinetic Cyber Range (KCR).
Located at the FBI’s North Campus on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, the Kinetic Cyber Range is a 22,000-square-foot training facility operated by the FBI’s Operational Technology Division. The facility was designed to provide hands-on experience in cyber investigations, digital forensics, network analysis, vehicle forensics, and search warrant operations using realistic environments that mirror conditions investigators encounter in the field.
According to the FBI, the facility has trained more than 1,400 students since opening in February 2025, including FBI personnel and law enforcement partners from other agencies.
Unlike traditional classroom instruction, the Kinetic Cyber Range allows students to work inside fully functional environments that simulate real-world investigative scenarios. The facility includes homes, hotel rooms, business environments, a hospital, a gas station, a power company, vehicle examination areas, and a functioning data center.
FBI officials say the goal is to move beyond theory-based instruction by allowing students to encounter realistic technology systems, networks, and digital evidence sources before facing similar situations during actual investigations.
Training scenarios include executing search warrants, processing digital evidence, conducting interviews, examining connected devices, analyzing enterprise networks, and recovering information from modern vehicles.
One exercise highlighted by the FBI involved students extracting data from a vehicle’s electronic control unit, commonly referred to as an ECU. Modern vehicles store large amounts of electronic information that can become valuable evidence during criminal investigations.
The facility also contains a data center with more than 200 servers operating on multiple platforms, allowing students to experience the challenges of working in large-scale enterprise environments.
According to FBI personnel, the systems operating inside the Kinetic Cyber Range are designed to function like those investigators encounter in actual businesses, organizations, and networks. Students may encounter Active Directory environments, email systems, firewalls, servers, and other technologies commonly found in modern enterprises.
The training environment also supports collaboration between multiple FBI components, including the Operational Technology Division and the Cyber Division.
While digital forensic specialists often focus on recovering evidence from physical devices, cyber investigators frequently work cases involving threat actors operating remotely from overseas locations. As a result, training scenarios are designed to expose students to both technical investigations and the communication skills required when working with businesses, legal teams, and victims.
The FBI stated that some exercises involve simulated cyber incidents, including ransomware attacks affecting critical systems. These scenarios require students to evaluate technical evidence while also navigating operational challenges and interactions with affected organizations.
According to FBI officials, training scenarios are regularly updated to reflect emerging technologies and evolving criminal threats. Areas of focus include Internet-connected devices, vehicle forensics, drones, enterprise networks, and other technologies increasingly encountered during investigations.
The Bureau emphasized that the Kinetic Cyber Range is intended to provide a controlled environment where students can learn from mistakes before applying those lessons in real-world investigations.
As cybercrime, digital evidence, and connected technologies continue expanding across nearly every aspect of modern life, the FBI says facilities such as the Kinetic Cyber Range help ensure investigators remain prepared for the increasingly technical challenges facing law enforcement today.

Students train in realistic investigative scenarios alongside role players portraying business leaders and legal teams, helping develop both technical capabilities and the communication skills required in the field.

Great concept, and definitely needed so agents can receive adequate training.
Thank you very much, Edward.
I absolutely agree. As investigations become increasingly dependent on technology and digital evidence, having realistic training environments like the Kinetic Cyber Range helps prepare investigators for the types of situations they will encounter in the field. The hands-on approach appears to provide valuable experience that simply cannot be replicated through classroom instruction alone.
Thank you again for reading and for taking the time to comment. I greatly appreciate it. I hope you have a great night. 😎
You’re very welcome, and I hope you have a great weekend.
Thank you for this great article. The video gives some insight into this large facility. This is the best kind of training in my opinion. The days of classwork alone should be long gone because this type of training would be so much more effective. Personally, I would much rather be trained with “real-world” type of training like this. That so many have already been through this facility in the short time it has been open is great news.
Thanks again for this and all of the other informative articles today, John.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
I absolutely agree. There is a big difference between learning concepts in a classroom and applying those skills in realistic environments that closely resemble what investigators will encounter in the field. Training facilities like the Kinetic Cyber Range allow students to gain practical experience while working through scenarios involving technology, digital evidence, and real-world problem solving.
The combination of homes, businesses, vehicles, and other operational environments gives students the opportunity to train in situations that go far beyond traditional classroom instruction.
Thank you again for reading and for all of your continued support, Chris. I greatly appreciate it. I hope all is well, and I hope you have a great day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you again for such a good article and reply. I may not ever have heard of this training facility if it hadn’t been for this article. It is encouraging to see that this type of training is taking place. As you noted, agents need to be able to handle many different types of information and this Kinetic Cyber Range should be a great help.
Thanks again, John, and I hope all is well there and that you are having a great day!😊
