NEWARK, N.J. — Federal authorities have charged a New Jersey man with attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) following a lengthy FBI counterterrorism investigation involving alleged online communications, extremist ideology, and discussions of potential attacks within the United States.
According to the Department of Justice, Mohamed Sagha, 22, of Wayne, New Jersey, was charged by criminal complaint with one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. Sagha made his initial appearance in federal court and was ordered detained pending further proceedings.
Federal prosecutors allege that between approximately December 2025 and June 2026, Sagha participated in online chat groups where ISIS supporters allegedly discussed extremist ideology and potential attacks against targets located within the United States, including places of worship.
According to court documents, Sagha allegedly established online communications in October 2025 with a confidential human source whom he believed was an ISIS member operating within territory controlled by the terrorist organization.
Investigators allege Sagha expressed interest in assisting another individual associated with an ISIS-supporting online group in carrying out an attack targeting a place of worship. Federal authorities further allege he discussed the possibility of conducting an attack himself and identified potential targets including a National Guard facility and a Jewish place of worship located near his residence.
Court filings state Sagha allegedly shared photographs and videos of potential targets with the confidential source during the course of the investigation.
Federal authorities also allege Sagha repeatedly expressed a desire to travel overseas to ISIS-controlled territory and made an unsuccessful attempt to do so in March 2026.
According to investigators, communications between Sagha and the confidential source later shifted toward discussions involving Virtual Private Network technology, commonly referred to as VPN services. Federal authorities allege Sagha purchased a VPN subscription and provided it to the individual he believed to be an ISIS member while also explaining how the technology could be utilized.
Federal prosecutors contend that technologies designed to conceal online identities, locations, and communications can constitute material support when knowingly provided to members of designated foreign terrorist organizations for operational purposes.
The case highlights ongoing concerns among federal counterterrorism officials regarding the role of online radicalization, encrypted communications, anonymous internet technologies, and extremist recruitment efforts occurring across digital platforms.
Federal authorities continue warning that terrorist organizations increasingly rely on online communications infrastructure, virtual communities, encrypted services, and digital networking tools to recruit supporters, distribute propaganda, facilitate communications, and encourage attacks by individuals operating independently within Western countries.
The FBI stated the investigation successfully disrupted the alleged activity before any attack occurred.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Newark Field Office with assistance from the New York City Police Department and the Wayne Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by Senior National Security Counsel Sammi Malek of the United States Attorney’s Office National Security Unit along with Trial Attorneys Justin Sher and Jay Rezai of the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
If convicted, Sagha faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a lifetime term of supervised release.
The criminal complaint contains allegations of criminal conduct. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

If this guy is found guilty, I would not be against a lifetime term of supervised release. We’ve got to continue to hold a hard line when it comes to terrorist groups. I’m sure glad they caught this guy.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
