FBI MOST WANTED FRAUDSTER SURRENDERS DAYS AFTER BEING ADDED TO NEW FEDERAL WANTED LIST

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man accused of stealing millions of dollars from a federal child nutrition program during the COVID-19 pandemic has surrendered to authorities less than a week after being added to the FBI’s newly launched Most Wanted Fraudsters list, according to federal officials.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced that Said Abdullahi Ereg was taken into custody June 10 in Minnesota, marking the first arrest connected to the newly established federal initiative targeting major fraud suspects accused of stealing taxpayer-funded resources.

Federal authorities have sought Ereg’s arrest since 2024 in connection with allegations that he participated in a scheme that fraudulently obtained more than $4 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program between 2020 and 2021.

The Federal Child Nutrition Program provides funding for meals and nutritional assistance to children and families. During the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency modifications and expanded funding were implemented nationwide to ensure children continued receiving meals despite school closures and disruptions to normal operations.

According to the FBI, Ereg was recently added to the bureau’s newly established Most Wanted Fraudsters list, which was announced in partnership with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud. Federal officials say the initiative was created to identify and publicize individuals accused of significant fraud schemes involving taxpayer-funded programs and government assistance funds.

FBI Director Kash Patel described the arrest as a milestone for the program and stated that the list was specifically designed to locate and apprehend individuals accused of large-scale fraud offenses against the American public.

Federal authorities have increasingly focused on pandemic-related fraud investigations in recent years. The Department of Justice and federal law enforcement agencies have pursued numerous cases involving alleged theft from relief programs established during the COVID-19 emergency, including programs intended to support businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and food assistance operations.

Investigators allege that Ereg improperly obtained millions of dollars that were intended to provide meals and nutritional support for children during one of the most challenging periods of the pandemic.

The White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, led by Vice President J.D. Vance, was established to coordinate efforts among federal agencies to identify fraud, recover taxpayer funds, and pursue criminal prosecutions involving government programs.
