ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison after being convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material involving a prepubescent minor.
U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that Zachary Guthrie, 32, of Rochester, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa to 72 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release.
According to federal authorities, the investigation began in October 2024 after the New York State Police received CyberTip reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The reports indicated that child sexual abuse material had been uploaded through online platforms, including Instagram and Discord.
Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at Guthrie’s residence and seized electronic devices, including a cellular phone.
A forensic examination of the device recovered more than 200 videos and more than 320 images containing child sexual abuse material, according to prosecutors. Authorities stated that some of the material depicted the sexual exploitation of children and included violent content involving minors.
The case highlights the increasingly important role that CyberTip reports play in identifying and investigating online child exploitation offenses. NCMEC receives reports from electronic service providers and online platforms that identify suspected child sexual abuse material and forwards those reports to appropriate law enforcement agencies for investigation.
Federal authorities have continued to emphasize that digital platforms, cloud storage services, social media applications, and encrypted communications platforms remain significant areas of focus in child exploitation investigations as offenders increasingly use technology to store, distribute, and access illegal material.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Katelyn M. Hartford.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under the direction of Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Brendan Dunford, the New York State Police under the direction of Major Kevin Sucher, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
