Astronomers have identified a possible new dwarf planet so distant that it takes approximately 25,000 years to complete a single orbit around the Sun, offering scientists a rare opportunity to study one of the Solar System’s oldest and most isolated survivors.
Humanity has spent centuries mapping the heavens, sending robotic explorers across the Solar System, landing spacecraft on comets and asteroids, and placing sophisticated observatories into orbit around Earth. Yet despite those remarkable achievements, the outer reaches of our own Solar System remain among the least understood regions of our cosmic neighborhood.
That reality has become even clearer following the discovery of an extraordinary distant object known as 2017 OF201, a possible dwarf planet traveling through one of the most remote regions ever observed by astronomers. Scientists estimate the icy world requires approximately 25,000 years to complete a single orbit around the Sun, spending nearly all of that immense journey in the deep darkness far beyond Neptune where sunlight is little more than a distant glow.
The discovery offers far more than another entry in an astronomical catalog.
Researchers believe objects occupying these remote regions have remained largely unchanged since the Solar System formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Unlike planets closer to the Sun that have experienced extensive geological activity, repeated impacts, atmospheric evolution, and countless gravitational interactions, distant icy worlds preserve ancient material dating back to the earliest stages of planetary formation. In many respects, they serve as frozen time capsules carrying evidence from an era when the Sun and its planets were only beginning to emerge from a swirling cloud of gas and dust.
Astronomers estimate 2017 OF201 measures roughly 700 kilometers (435 miles) in diameter, making it large enough to qualify as a candidate dwarf planet pending additional observations. Although significantly smaller than Pluto, the object’s size places it among the larger known bodies inhabiting the distant outer Solar System.
Its orbit is what truly distinguishes it.
At its closest approach to the Sun, known as perihelion, 2017 OF201 travels to approximately 45 astronomical units, placing it at a distance comparable to Pluto’s orbit. At its most distant point, known as aphelion, it ventures beyond 1,600 astronomical units from the Sun, carrying it into a region so remote that completing a single revolution requires approximately twenty-five millennia.
To appreciate the scale of that journey, consider this: the last time 2017 OF201 approached the inner portion of its orbit, human civilization had not yet developed agriculture, cities, written language, or recorded history. Entire civilizations have risen and fallen many times over during a single orbit of this distant world.
Its immense distance also explains why discovering it proved so difficult.
The discovery itself was years in the making.
Although the object carries the designation 2017 OF201, astronomers did not publicly announce the discovery until May 2025 after painstakingly analyzing years of archival observations collected by multiple observatories. Rather than spotting the distant world during a single observing session, researchers linked together images captured over many years, confirming that each observation belonged to the same slowly moving object traveling through the outer Solar System.
Additional pre-discovery images dating back even further allowed scientists to reconstruct a much larger portion of its orbit, giving them the confidence needed to calculate its extraordinary 25,000-year journey around the Sun. The discovery highlights how advances in computing, data analysis, and long-term astronomical archives are becoming just as important as building larger telescopes. In many cases, remarkable discoveries are now being made by reexamining observations that have existed for years, revealing objects that had been hidden in plain sight.
For nearly its entire orbit, 2017 OF201 remains so far from the Sun that it reflects only an incredibly faint amount of sunlight, rendering it almost invisible even to powerful modern telescopes. Astronomers identified the object only after carefully examining years of archived observations collected from observatories in Chile and Hawaii, piecing together enough data to calculate its remarkable orbit.
The discovery also reinforces an important scientific reality.
The Solar System did not abruptly end at Neptune.
Beyond the eighth planet lies an enormous frontier populated by icy bodies, dwarf planets, scattered objects, and other remnants left behind during the Solar System’s formation. Many of these worlds have remained hidden simply because they spend nearly all of their existence in regions so distant that they are extraordinarily difficult to observe from Earth.
That raises an intriguing possibility.
If astronomers discovered 2017 OF201 while it occupied the relatively brief portion of its orbit where detection was possible, countless additional large objects may still await discovery beyond the known planets. Scientists increasingly believe the outer Solar System contains a far richer and more diverse population of ancient worlds than previously understood.
The discovery also adds another piece to the ongoing scientific debate surrounding the proposed existence of Planet Nine.
For years, astronomers have studied unusual orbital patterns among several distant trans-Neptunian objects in an effort to determine whether the gravitational influence of an undiscovered giant planet may be shaping their trajectories. While 2017 OF201 does not eliminate the Planet Nine hypothesis, its highly unusual orbit introduces additional complexity that researchers will need to incorporate into future models of the outer Solar System.
Rather than providing a simple answer, the discovery reminds scientists that nature often proves more complicated than theoretical predictions.
As increasingly powerful observatories begin scanning the sky with unprecedented sensitivity, researchers expect discoveries like 2017 OF201 to become more common. Facilities such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory are expected to dramatically expand humanity’s inventory of distant Solar System objects, potentially revealing hundreds or even thousands of previously unknown worlds lurking beyond Neptune.
Each new discovery improves scientists’ understanding of planetary formation, gravitational evolution, and the architecture of the Solar System itself.
What once appeared to be an empty expanse beyond Neptune is increasingly revealing itself as a vast frontier filled with ancient survivors that have silently orbited the Sun since long before the first humans ever looked toward the night sky.

As new observatories begin surveying the heavens with unprecedented sensitivity, scientists are likely to discover many more distant worlds hidden beyond Neptune. Each new object will help refine our understanding of how the Solar System formed, how it evolved over billions of years, and what still remains unseen at its outermost reaches. Every discovery reminds us that our cosmic backyard is far larger, more complex, and far less understood than many people realize. Humanity has not reached the end of exploration. In many ways, we are only beginning to understand the vast frontier that surrounds our own Sun.

I agree, there is so much about our solar system, we’ve yet to discover. Even though Pluto has been relegated to a dwarf planet, I never considered that the solar system stopped at Neptune.
