ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico man has been arrested on a federal criminal complaint after authorities alleged he posted threatening comments on Facebook directed at an upcoming Pride event in neighboring Texas, prompting an FBI investigation that led to his arrest less than 24 hours later.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico announced Tuesday that Michael Kenneth Thompson, 44, of Clovis, has been charged with interstate threatening communications.
According to court documents, the investigation began on June 27, 2026, after Thompson allegedly posted several threatening comments beneath a Lubbock Pride Fest 2026 event post published on the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Facebook page.
Federal prosecutors allege Thompson referred to the Pride event as “hunting season” and “target practice.” Authorities further allege that after another Facebook user responded to the comments, Thompson replied that he did not need assistance, stating he needed “just more ammo!“
Investigators said the comments were reported to law enforcement through an anonymous tip submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Threat Operations Center, which evaluates reports involving potential threats of violence throughout the United States.
According to the criminal complaint, FBI investigators traced the Facebook account to Thompson in Clovis, New Mexico, and coordinated with local law enforcement to conduct a follow-up interview.
Authorities allege Thompson admitted making the online comments and acknowledged deleting them after posting.
Federal agents arrested Thompson at his residence in Clovis on June 28, 2026.
He has been charged with interstate threatening communications, a federal offense involving the transmission of threats across state lines using interstate communication systems, including the internet and social media platforms.
According to federal prosecutors, Thompson remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for July 1, 2026.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
Federal authorities continue to encourage members of the public to report statements or online activity that may indicate credible threats of violence. The FBI routinely evaluates reports received through its National Threat Operations Center and coordinates with state and local law enforcement agencies when potential criminal violations are identified.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Roswell Resident Agency, part of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Clovis Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
Because the case was initiated through a criminal complaint, the allegations have not been proven in court. Thompson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

I would be the last person to promote a pride parade but I would also be that last person to do what this guy has gone and done. If he is proven guilty of these charges he should also be checked on occasionally after his prison sentence. We are supposed to be concerned for people we disagree with at times. Violence is certainly not an answer. Violence causes more violence and fuels anger. I hope this man gets a fair trial and an appropriate sentence if found guilty. I also hope he begins to understand that he is a part of the problem.
