SEATTLE — A member of a violent home invasion robbery crew responsible for a series of armed robberies, kidnappings, and a fatal shooting across Western Washington has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison after admitting his role in a racketeering enterprise that terrorized families throughout the region.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington announced Tuesday that Christopher Joseph Johnson, 24, received the sentence after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
Federal prosecutors said Johnson also admitted to aiding and abetting the murder of Irah Marcello Sok, who was fatally shot during a home invasion robbery in Snohomish County on August 19, 2022.
During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Lauren King described the crimes as a calculated campaign of violence fueled by greed that inflicted lasting trauma on numerous victims throughout Western Washington.
According to court records, Johnson pleaded guilty in February 2026, acknowledging his participation in a criminal enterprise led by co-defendant Kevin Thissel, 29, and other associates who committed a series of coordinated home invasion robberies during the summer of 2022.
Federal investigators said the organization carefully selected victims by reviewing social media posts that displayed wealth, valuable collections, or expensive property before conducting surveillance of targeted homes.
Once a target was chosen, members of the crew allegedly carried out carefully planned nighttime attacks. Prosecutors said the suspects frequently dressed in black clothing, wore masks, carried firearms, and falsely identified themselves as law enforcement officers before forcing entry into occupied homes.
Inside the residences, victims were allegedly held at gunpoint, restrained with zip ties, and forced to surrender valuables while the homes were searched. Court documents state that children, including victims as young as nine years old, were among those restrained during the robberies.
Investigators determined each member of the organization performed specific roles, including identifying potential victims, conducting surveillance, serving as getaway drivers, forcing entry into homes, controlling occupants, and stealing valuables. Prosecutors also stated that some participants in the criminal enterprise were juveniles.
Court records detail a series of violent offenses linked to Johnson and the robbery crew, including:
- The May 24, 2022, armed home invasion robbery of a family in Mount Vernon, during which a young boy was kidnapped.
- An attempted burglary on Mercer Island the same day in which a firearm was discharged at an occupied residence.
- The burglary of an unoccupied home in Kent on May 27, 2022.
- An attempted home invasion in Kent on June 19, 2022, where a resident fired at the suspects, causing them to flee.
- An armed robbery targeting a couple in Burien on July 14, 2022.
- The armed robbery and kidnapping of a woman in Kent on July 28, 2022, during which prosecutors said she was forced to withdraw money from ATMs.
- The August 12, 2022, armed robbery of two Kent residents who were locked inside a closet while their home was ransacked.
- The August 19, 2022, home invasion in Snohomish County that resulted in the fatal shooting of Irah Marcello Sok.
Federal prosecutors noted that some criminal acts acknowledged in Johnson’s plea agreement were not separately charged but were considered by the court when determining an appropriate sentence under federal sentencing guidelines.
In addition to the federal conviction, Johnson pleaded guilty in Snohomish County Superior Court to second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Sok. He received a 25-year state sentence, which will run concurrently with his federal prison sentence.
Judge King also recommended Johnson serve his incarceration within the Washington State prison system.
Following his release from prison, Johnson will be required to serve five years of supervised release under federal supervision.
The court has scheduled a separate restitution hearing for September 22, 2026, to determine financial compensation owed to the victims.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with significant assistance from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Kent Police Department, and the King County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Todd Greenberg and Brian Wynne prosecuted the federal case. Former Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephen Hobbs and Michael Lang also assisted during the investigation in coordination with the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office.

“In addition to the federal conviction, Johnson pleaded guilty in Snohomish County Superior Court to second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Sok.”
I understand that 25 years is a long time to spend in prison. I can only wonder if it will be enough for this person. I looked up this string of robberies and they terrorized people while being committed. Here is only one of the articles I found on this:
https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/no-sentence-will-ever-undo-harm-member-violent-wa-home-invasion-crew-gets-25-years-dead/MHL3YH3EK5GDHIG25FDUBED5AE/
This article states:
“This crime ring terrorized people up and down the I-5 corridor – women, children, families – anyone they thought had valuables they could steal,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd. “This lengthy sentence keeps this defendant off the streets until he is well into his 40’s, protecting the public and hopefully making a change in his behavior.”
I can only wonder if the people that were hurt by this will feel safe when this man is eventually let out of prison. I hope for a life change, of course, but sometimes I think some of these sentences should be reevaluated once in a while.
One man lost his life and others were robbed at gunpoint in the middle of the night. I really can’t say if this is a good sentencing decision or not. I guess only time will tell.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
That’s one of those cases where no sentence is ever going to feel sufficient, and I agree, especially when a life was taken and so many others were traumatized. I think it’s natural for people to wrestle with whether justice has truly been served in situations like this.
I noticed you took the time to read more about the case as well. I always appreciate that because it tells me you’re interested in understanding the full story rather than just the headline.
Thank you again, Chris. It’s always greatly appreciated. I hope you have a great day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and I appreciate this comment. I also think it is natural for people to wrestle with whether justice has been served in situations like this. I think I was curious about this story because these guys were going into people’s homes and basically terrorizing them besides all of the crime. All crime is bad but entering into someone else’s domain the way they did can really have a long lasting effect on people.
Thanks again, John, and I hope you have a great evening!😊
