Scientists Discover New Hydrothermal Pool After Sudden Ground Collapse Near Biscuit Basin
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — Scientists have documented the sudden appearance of a new actively boiling hydrothermal pool in Yellowstone National Park after a small underground hydrothermal explosion reshaped part of the park’s Biscuit Basin geothermal area earlier this month, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Researchers determined the new thermal feature formed between June 14 and June 16, only days after monitoring instruments detected unusual seismic activity and low-frequency acoustic signals associated with a hydrothermal explosion on June 13. The event occurred near Black Diamond Pool, the same area that experienced a much larger hydrothermal explosion in July 2024.
According to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO), geologists had walked across the area only two days before the new feature appeared. When they returned, they discovered an actively boiling, gray-colored pool measuring approximately 21 feet by 17 feet, along with three newly formed hydrothermal vent systems and a large water-filled fissure extending toward the Firehole River.
Monitoring equipment recorded abnormal seismic energy and infrasound—low-frequency acoustic waves often associated with volcanic or hydrothermal activity—shortly after 5:09 a.m. on June 13. As daylight emerged, park personnel observed a light-gray, sediment-filled plume flowing through the Firehole River, indicating that significant hydrothermal activity had occurred upstream.
Fortunately, cameras installed by the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory in 2025 captured the event. Video footage showed a dark steam plume erupting from the ground just north of Black Diamond Pool at the same time monitoring instruments detected the seismic and acoustic signals. Investigators later confirmed the explosion did not originate from Black Diamond Pool itself but from newly opened underground pathways where near-boiling groundwater rapidly flashed into steam beneath the surface.
Field investigations identified three separate groups of newly formed hydrothermal vents, several new runoff channels carrying mineral-rich water into the Firehole River, and an approximately 61-foot-long fissure containing water near the local boiling temperature. Scientists also observed scattered rocks surrounding portions of the site, indicating that the explosion ejected material from beneath the surface, although the event was considerably smaller than the hydrothermal explosion that damaged Biscuit Basin in 2024.
Unlike the explosive vents, researchers believe the newly formed boiling pool itself developed through ground collapse rather than a secondary explosion. The absence of surrounding rock debris suggests underground cavities weakened following the hydrothermal event before the surface collapsed, creating the new pool.
On June 18, scientists observed the newly formed pool intermittently ejecting water 20 to 30 feet into the air, raising the possibility that it could temporarily behave like a geyser. Those eruptions have since subsided, and researchers say it remains too early to determine whether the feature will become a permanent part of Yellowstone’s geothermal landscape or gradually cool over time.
Hydrothermal explosions differ from volcanic eruptions because they are driven by rapidly expanding steam rather than rising magma. When groundwater trapped beneath the surface becomes superheated under pressure, a sudden pressure release can cause the water to flash into steam almost instantaneously. The resulting expansion can fracture surrounding rock, create new vents, alter underground plumbing systems, and reshape geothermal features with little or no warning.
Yellowstone contains more than 10,000 hydrothermal features, including geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots, and steam vents, making it home to roughly half of the world’s known active hydrothermal systems. Scientists note that while the park sits atop one of the world’s largest volcanic systems, hydrothermal explosions are relatively common geological events and are not considered indicators that a volcanic eruption is imminent. Instead, they reflect the constantly changing underground movement of heat, steam, water, and mineral-rich fluids beneath the surface.
The incident also highlights the importance of Yellowstone’s expanding geophysical monitoring network. By combining seismic sensors, infrasound instruments, temperature monitoring, cameras, and satellite observations, scientists are gaining an increasingly detailed understanding of how hydrothermal systems evolve and the warning signs that may precede future explosions.
TRJ Verdict
The formation of Yellowstone’s newest boiling pool serves as another reminder that the park’s geothermal landscape is constantly changing. Although hydrothermal explosions are a normal part of Yellowstone’s natural evolution, they remain among the park’s most unpredictable hazards because they can occur with little advance warning. Continued scientific monitoring is providing researchers with valuable insight into these powerful underground processes while helping improve public safety in one of the world’s most active geothermal environments.
